Dusty plasma

Microwave discharges at pressures below 1 Pa witli low collision frequencies can be generated in tlie presence of a magnetic field B where tlie electrons rotate witli tlie electron cyclotron frequency. In a magnetic field of 875 G tlie rotational motion of tlie electrons is in resonance witli tlie microwaves of 2.45 GHz. In such low-pressure electron cyclotron resonance plasma sources collisions between tlie atoms, molecules and ions are reduced and the fonnation of unwanted particles in tlie plasma volume ( dusty plasma ) is largely avoided. [Pg.2803]

In the first place, these are nonlinear effects in the grain screening. Simple estimates evidence that the magnitude of the ratio cp)/k (T (where e is the electron charge, is the potential, k >, and T are the Boltzmann constant and the temperature, respectively), which determines the significance of nonlinear effects, is, near the grain surface, on the order of 10 in real experiments on dusty plasmas and charged colloidal suspensions. This means that the linear approximation may fail in this case. [Pg.292]

Plasmas satisfying this condition are called ideal plasmas. A non-ideal plasma, corresponding to inverse inequality (3-226) and a very high density of charged particles, is not found in nature. Even the creation of such plasma in the laboratory is problematic. Probably only dusty plasmas can reveal non-ideal behavior. [Pg.141]

In most plasmas of interest Fe(i) 1, which means they are ideal. In a dusty plasma (Fridman Ketmedy, 2004) with a dust particle density n, charge Z e, and temperature 7d, the non-ideality parameter (which is also called the Coulomb coupling parameter) is... [Pg.141]

Because particles can be strongly charged (Zd 1), dusty plasmas can be essentially non-ideal. [Pg.141]
