The possible drug-induced causes of ANCA-positive vasculitis with high titers of antimyeloperoxidase antibodies in 30 new patients have been reviewed (65). The findings illustrated that this type of vasculitis is a predominantly drug-induced disorder. Only 12 of the 30 cases were not related to a drug. The most frequently implicated drug was hydralazine (n = 10) the remainder involved propylthiouracil (n = 3), penicillamine (n = 2), allopurinol (n = 2), and sulfasalazine (n = 1). [Pg.339]

It is now widely accepted that the term Parkinson s syndrome refers to a collection of neurodegenerative diseases, all of which are characterized by movement disorders. It also applies to drug-induced disorders of the parkinsonian type. A schematic representation of this syndrome is shown in Figure 13.1. [Pg.319]

From a pharmaceutical care perspective, disorders of electrolyte homeostasis can result from drug therapy. In addition, with some drug therapies, toxicity can be enhanced when underlying electrolyte disorders are present. Drug-induced disorders respond well to... [Pg.937]

Ivy Sharer. In the case of Ivy Sharer, a diffuse myopathic process was ) superimposed on her AIDS and her pulmonary tuberculosis, either of which could have caused progressive weakness. In addition, she could have been suffering from a congenital mtDNA myopathy, symptomatic only as she ages. A systematic diagnostic process, however, finally led her physician to conclude that her myopathy was caused by a disorder of oxidative phosphorylation induced by her treatment with zidovndine (AZT). Fortunately, when AZT was discontinued, Ivy s myopathic symptoms gradually subsided. A repeat skeletal muscle biopsy performed 4 months later showed that her skeletal muscle cell mtDNA had been restored to normal and that she had experienced a reversible drug-induced disorder of oxidative phosphorylation. [Pg.396]
