Drilling break

Drilling break. A relatively sudden increase in the instantaneous drilling rate is called the drilling break. The drilling break may occur due to a decrease in the difference between the borehole pressure and formation pore pressure. When a drilling break is observed, the pumps should be stopped and the well watched for flow at the mud line. If the well does not flow, it means that the overbalance is not lost or simply that a softer formation has been encountered. [Pg.1101]

Cable-tool drilling works in much the same way as a chisel is used to cut wood or stone [1]. A steel cable repeatedly drops and raises a heavy cutting tool called a bit. Bits may be as long as 8 feet (2.4 m) with a diameter of 4 to 12.5 inches (10-31.8 cm). Each time the bit drops, it drives deeper and deeper into the earth. The sharp edges of the bit break up the soil and rock into small particles. From time to time, the workers pull out the cable and drill bit and pour water into the hole. They then scoop up the water and particles at the bottom of the hole with a long steel tool known as a bailer. [Pg.236]

Several emerging processes may be applicable for treatment of oily drilling muds prior to disposal. One process being tested in Europe involves the use of an electric distillation kiln to break down solids-laden oil-based drilling muds [13]. Another process uses critical fluid to extract oil and organics from oily sludges so that they can be landhlled [34]. Copa and Dietrich [14] treated a sample of spent drilling mud with wet air oxidation. The COD content was reduced by 45 to 64% and the dewaterability of the mud was improved. [Pg.276]

I found today that stiff wires from the battery will break off the card supply plug pins as shown - use better connector or drill the card tie in place. Have been letting it flap in the wind, pins are too tender to do much of that need the solder joints expoxied for strain relief. Decoking by Drilling. For this method of decoking, a hydraulically controlled, rotating drill stem is mounted in a well below the coke drum. At the end of the cycle, the bottom from the coke drum is removed and a hole is drilled upward through the coke bed. The drill is then removed from the stem and knocker-bars are mounted in its place. The knocker-bars swing out from the drill stem when it is rotated, hit the coke, and break it loose from the drum. The coke falls out and is recovered (5,40). [Pg.284]
