Drift-off

All scales reqmre continuous monitoring to assure that the desired set weight is maintained and does not drift off because of changes in product bulk-density or flow characteristics. Microprocessors can perform this task automatically. [Pg.1943]

If we were to place a piece of zinc metal into an aqueous copper(II) sulfate solution, we would see a layer of metallic copper begin to deposit on the surface of the zinc (see Fig. K.5). If we could watch the reaction at the atomic level, we would see that, as the reaction takes place, electrons are transferred from the Zn atoms to adjacent Cu2 r ions in the solution. These electrons reduce the Cu2+ ions to Cu atoms, which stick to the surface of the zinc or form a finely divided solid deposit in the beaker. The piece of zinc slowly disappears as its atoms give up electrons and form colorless Zn2+ ions that drift off into the solution. The Gibbs free energy of the system decreases as electrons are transferred and the reaction approaches equilibrium. However, although energy is released as heat, no electrical work is done. [Pg.611]

Localized, or field-scale, studies generally assess pesticides drifting off-target during application or from post-application volatilization over short sampling intervals. The... [Pg.924]

Instead of going to bed relaxed and drifting off to sleep, individuals with insomnia go to bed worrying whether they will be able to fall asleep, how long it will take to do so, or whether they will be too tired to wake up on time the next day. They try hard to fall asleep, but trying so hard actually increases their level of arousal, making it ever more difficult to sleep. They become increasingly frustrated and develop a conditioned dread of bedtime. [Pg.262]

It was hardly the sort of situation in which I wanted to exalt my brother s prowess as a telepath. I said nothing and waited, squirming, for his raving to drift off into incoherence. But I was impressed and convinced that he had somehow penetrated not only my immediate thoughts but my private memories. [Pg.111]

Imagine that you are sleeping. It is seven AM. With unnerving suddenness, the alarm from your electronic clock wakes you from the depths of a pleasant dream. Damn, you whisper. A romantic image fades like an angel drifting off into distant clouds. Why does the alarm have to go off now ... [Pg.118]

It is almost impossible to talk about memorization without bringing up observation. Sherlock Holmes said, You see but you do not observe. Some people are naturally observant. Some frequently drift off and have no awareness of the world around them. Whatever category you think you are in, it is never too late to sharpen, or acquire, strong observation skills. How Practice, of course. [Pg.153]

And what became of this Prussian charlatan when an influenza epidemic broke out — an epidemic that Dr. Bato s Remedy could do nothing to curtail For a time he was publicly ridiculed — and he was even lampooned as Dr. Caterpillar in a play appropriately titled None Are So Blind as Those Who Won t See. But he did not relinquish his own theatrical ambitions. Instead he waited for some new scientific phenomenon that he could incorporate into his act. Finally, the Montgolfier brothers introduced the hot air balloon, and Katterfelto had his new demo. During his show he launched what he called fire balloons and explained to the audience the workings of this new scientific marvel. At least until one of the balloons drifted off and ignited a haystack in a farmer s field. [Pg.257]

In attempting to estimate the exposure of orchard workers, it could be presumed that, of the total amount sprayed, the amount that did not impinge upon the target or drift off would be available for contact on the worker. In a preliminary trial using air blast equipment, Chiba (1) found that 53% of the spray cloud hit the target, 13.5% fell to the ground and 33.5% remained in the air. [Pg.158]

In the summer of 1995, the Panamanian cruise ship Royal Majesty ran aground off the coast of Nantucket Island. The ship drifted off course because its satellite-based navigational system silently failed, and the crew did not monitor other sources of information that would have warned them they were in danger. Luckily, no one was hurt, but the mistake cost Majesty Cruise Lines 7 million in damages and lost revenue (Azar, 1998). Similar circumstances can occur in today s highly automated pharmacy. Employees can be become complacent, and the resulting mistakes in both patient and pharmacy safety and security can be catastrophic. [Pg.499]

The forest pest manager has a need for information on how much spray reaches the tree crown and the forest floor, or drifts off the target. Understanding interaction of spray within the tree crown, quantifying the collection of drops by foliage elements, and determining how much spray deposits on the forest floor are part of the accountancy process. [Pg.118]

The data sets reviewed, document our knowledge on the deposition of aerial sprays released over coniferous forests. Conifers are relatively efficient collectors of spray drops as more drops are consistently observed on the ground in open areas than beneath trees. Spray which penetrates the upper canopy, and is unaccounted for on samplers in the lower canopy, probably was filtered out by foliage. More deposits are observed in the upper crown than in the lower crown. Data are lacking, however, on the fate of drops which do not penetrate the canopy. There is a potential for these drops to penetrate the canopy downwind or to drift off target. [Pg.135]

Once the external parameters (pco, p0,- and T) have been established to initiate autonomous kinetic oscillations, these can usually be sustained for periods of time as long as desired, provided that the surfaces are prevented from becoming contaminated (in particular by carbon, originating from spurious traces of hydrocarbons in the feed gas mixture) and that the partial pressures are not drifting off (31). With Pt(l 10) a complication may arise insofar that during the course of the reaction the surface struc-... [Pg.228]

In 1998, a weather balloon carrying instruments to measure the ozone layer drifted off course. It veered into transatlantic air routes, where it posed a serious danger. [Pg.434]
