DRIFT analysis

DRIFTS analysis was performed on the spent samples to obtain information on the chemical nature of the carbonaceous deposits retained on the catalysts. The spectra of all samples submitted to reaction and the spectra of samples regenerated under flowing H2 showed a band at 1580 cm, which is characteristic of highly condensed hydrocarbons and graphitic-like species. This band was absent on the spectra of samples regenerated under flowing air. C-H stretching bands were hardly noticeable on any spectra which confirm the condensed nature of the deposits. [Pg.235]

Starting soot oxidation with CuCl, the first step is or fgai activation on the surfiice of CuCl (Rl). Transfer of activated oxygai (indicated by O ) occurs according to reaction R2. The DRIFT analysis shows that this resufts in the formation of Surface Cbq gen Complexes (SOCs), indifattvl Iqf C-O,. Decomposition of the oxygen complexes results in the formation of CO and CO2. DRIFT analysis was performed using a Bruker IFS28 infra-red spectrometer equipped with a diffuse-reflectance TLC attachment (Bruker Spectrospin Ltd., Banner Lane, Coventry CV4 9GH, UK.) and a liquid N2-cooled MCT (Mercury-Cadmium-Telluride) detector. Unprocessed culture supernatants (5pl four replicates) were dried in the wells of a sandblasted aluminium plate mounted on a motorised stage and infra-red spectra were collected in the range 4000/cm-i-600/cm-i with 1 or 16 co-adds. Spectral data were converted into ASCII format for chemometric processing. [Pg.187]

Preparation of new aiuminophosphate oxynitride (AlPON) and nickel modified AlPON are presented. Such basic and polyfunctional catalysts are tested in Knoevenagel condensation and one step synthesis of methylisobutylketone (MIBK) from acetone. It is evidenced that the nitrogen content of the AlPON, which controls the rate of benzaldehyde-ethylcyanoacetate condensation depends on the activation procedure. 90% selectivity in the MIBK synthesis is obtained on Ni formate impregnating AlPON activated at 400 °C for 4 hours. TPD of CO2 and NH3, DRIFT analysis and quantum mechanical calculation evidence that the 0/N substitution creates strong basic sites. [Pg.381]

Further insight into the nature of the interaction between irreversibly adsorbed species and the filler surface can be gained from DRIFTS analysis of the filler sample taken from the FMC cell after completion of the adsorption - desorption cycle. DRIFTS is described in more detail in Section 3.5.4, but in summary, it is an infrared spectroscopic technique, that by virtue of a significant proportion of glancing angle reflections, affords enhanced resolution of filler surface functional groups. The authors have found this technique particularly useful when studying competitive adsorption of polymer stabilisers and carboxylic acids onto silica and metal hydroxides, respectively. [Pg.112]

If the small molecule has a lower refractive index than the carrier solvent and the probe a higher refractive index than the carrier solvent, the calculated level of amount of probe adsorbed will be greater than it really is. If however, both the probe and the small molecule have lower refractive index than the carrier solvent, the amount of probe adsorbed will be smaller than it really is. The extent to which this problem occurs also depends upon the solubility of the small molecule in the carrier solvent. This effect has cansed problems in a recent study [13] of adsorption of various carboxylic acids on to metal hydroxides. Figure 3.4 shows both the heat of adsorption and amount of carboxylic acid adsorbed. It is evident that adsorption of stearic acid (octadecanoic acid) and isostearic acid (16-methyl heptadecanoic acid) from toluene affords apparently reduced levels of adsorption, relative to when adsorbed from heptane. This is due to both the probe and the water having lower refractive indices than toluene. DRIFTS analysis of the respective filler samples retrieved from the FMC cell, however, indicates similar levels of adsorption. Only in the case of adsorption from heptane is the level of adsorption in concordance with theoretical values. This is due to reduced solubility of water in heptane, relative to toluene. [Pg.116]

Analysis of TLC spots by photoacoustic spectrometry (TLC7PAS) has been preferred over DRIFT analysis of strongly IR-absorbing samples (79). TThe spot containing 1-50 pg of the sample must be physically removed from the chromatoplate. After some preparation, it is placed in the photoacoustic cell for measurement. [Pg.836]
