Hydrogen peroxide concentrations of 35% and above may, and 50% and above do, cause spontaneous combustion of dry grasses, wood, and leaves. Spills of concentrated hydrogen peroxide should be diluted with excess amounts of water immediately. Practically all soHd combustible materials contain sufficient quantities of catalytic impurities to rapidly decompose hydrogen peroxide, especially at 70% concentration and above. [Pg.480]

Reactivity. Bromine is nonflammable but may ignite combustibles, such as dry grass, on contact. Handling bromine in a wet atmosphere, extreme heat, and temperatures low enough to cause bromine to soHdify (—6° C) should be avoided. Bromine should be stored in a cool, dry area away from heat. Vitivert, or Kus-hus.—The fleshy part of a specter of dry grass from India, It has an aromatic odor, and is used in the same manner as orris root. The tincture or extract of vitivert is made by digesting one pound of the dried root in a quart of alcohol for two weeks, and filtering. This tincture was formerly much used In bouquet combinations, and was an important ingredient in the once celebrated preparations of that kind called mousselaine des Indes, bouquet du rot, et cetera. There have been only a few citations in the literature concerning the extraction and recovery of natural chlorophyll pigments. Chlorophylls, despite their high molecular weights, are soluble in pure CO2 (like pheophytin a at 500 bar and 55°C), or in the presence of an entrainer (like copper chlorophyllin at 60 bar and 20°C with 5% ethanol entrainer).
