Impingement demister systems are designed to intercept liquid particles before the gas outlet. They are usually constructed from wire mesh or metal plates and liquid droplets impinge on the internal surfaces of the mist mats or plate labyrinth as the gas weaves through the system. The feed is normally introduced to the top hearth where the rabble arms and teeth attached to the central shaft rotate and spiral soflds across the hearth to the center, where an opening is provided and the soflds drop to the next hearth. The teeth of the rabble arms on the hearth spiral the soflds toward the outside to ports that let the soflds drop down to the next hearth. Soflds continue downward, traversing each hearth until they reach the bottom and the ash is discharged. The space immediately above the resin bed may or may not be filled with Hquid in downward flow systems, depending on the design. The gas stream from the cyclone separator, M, is sent to an electrostatic precipitator (ESP), N, which removes entrained acidic organics, and then sent to the packed tower, H, where SO2 and any SO traces are adsorbed in a dilute NaOH solution and finally vented, O. The fire death rate in the United States is decreasing, dropping from a rate of 76 per million in the 1940s, when most constmction and decorative products were made of natural materials, to 29 per million in the 1980s, by which time, PVC had replaced natural materials in numerous appHcations (189). This downward trend can be attributed in large part to improved building codes and the broader use of sprinkler systems and smoke detectors. However, the increased use of more fire-resistant materials, such as PVC, deserves part of the credit for this improvement. [Pg.510]
