DOW EUROPE

The most important chemical reaction of chi orohydrin s is dehydrochloriaation to produce epoxides. In the case of propylene oxide. The Dow Chemical Company is the only manufacturer ia the United States that still uses the chlorohydrin technology. In 1990 the U.S. propylene oxide production capacity was hsted as 1.43 x 10 t/yr, shared almost equally by Dow and Arco Chemical Co., which uses a process based on hydroperoxide iatermediates (69,70). More recentiy, Dow Europe SA, aimounced a decision to expand its propylene oxide capacity by 160,000 metric tons per year at the Stade, Germany site. This represents about a 40% iacrease over the current capacity (71). [Pg.75]

A new study carried out by Dow Europe and published by APME indicates that both mechanical recycling and energy recovery have a vital role in ensuring the most environmentally efficient disposal for plastic bottles. The survey carried out by Dow uses the example of an HD PE bottle. Main conclusions of the report are indicated. [Pg.98]

Strandfoam, developed by Dow, is said to be an easy to shape polyolefin foam consisting of thousands of joined strands of foam. The structure is said to improve cushioning and insulation properties and may replace some open cell PU applications. The process is briefly described and utilises ethylene-acrylic acid in a PE carrier. DOW EUROPE SA... [Pg.107]

There is a certain abstractness to chemicals which tends to frighten the layman and allows him to misinterpret the risks potentially associated with chemicals. The consequences of any such misinterpretations can vary in extreme cases from dangerous complacency on the one hand to unnecessary fear on the other. Educating the public in these matters, while extremely difficult, is vital to the future of the chemical industry as a whole. As Andrew Butl, President of Dow Europe said We have too easily become lost in our science and divorced from the outside world while the public was losing confidence in us, we were also losing touch with them [30]. If any such education programme is to be successful, it has to be based on an internationally unified approach to chemical hazards built on internationally accepted standards, criteria and interpretations. [Pg.286]
