The exchange of ions and solvent between a swollen ionic network and the surrounding electrolyte is represented in Fig. 136, where the fixed ion is taken to be a cation. It is apparent that the equilibrium between the swollen ionic gel and its surroundings closely resembles Donnan membrane equilibria. [Pg.585]

Membranes. Apart from the role of membranes180 in ISEs, there are at least three important applications of membranes as measurement aids in flow analysis. viz., as diffusion membranes in (1) (partial) dialysis and in (2a) membrane amperometry (MEAM) and (2b) membrane voltammetry (MEVA), and as Donnan membranes in (3) differential ionic chromatography. [Pg.369]

The search for models of biological membranes among porous membranes continued in the twenties and thirties. Here, Michaelis [67] and Sollner (for a summary of his work, see [90] for development in the field, [89]) should be mentioned. The existence and characteristics of Donnan membrane equilibria could be confirmed using this type of membrane [20]. The theory of porous membranes with fixed charges of a certain sign was developed by Teorell [93], and Meyer and Sievers [65]. [Pg.8]

During the last two decades, pressure-driven membrane processes namely reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF), and ultrafiltration (UF) have found increased applications in water utilities and chemical industries. Unlike RO, NF, and UF, the Donnan membrane process (DMP) or Donnan dialysis is driven by an electrochemical potential gradient across an ion-exchange membrane. Theoretically, the DMP is not susceptible to fouling because particulate matter or large organic molecules do not concentrate on the membrane surface, as commonly observed with pressure-driven membrane processes. DMP has been used in the past in hydrometallurgical operations [19,20], for concentration of ionic contaminants [21,22] and for separation of... [Pg.947]

Let us consider aluminum sulfate and sulfuric acid solutions in a Donnan membrane cell divided into two chambers by a cation-exchange membrane that aUows only cations to migrate from one side to the other but rejects any passage of anions according to Donnan s co-ion exclusion principle. At equihbrium, the electrochemical potential of aluminum (Al ) ion (/i) in the electrolyte solution on the left hand side (LHS) of the membrane will be the same as that in the electrolyte solution on the right hand side (RHS) i.e.. [Pg.948]
