Documentation photographing

Early scientific studies were ptedominandy aimed at objects often referred to as belonging to the fine arts. Subsequendy, equal importance and effort has been attached to studies of objects of cultural and historical interest, such as archaeological and ethnographic materials, or manuscripts, documents, photographs, and books in archives andUbraries. This article is meant to be inclusive of all such objects as well as of fine arts objects. The term art object when used is an inclusive, generic connotation rather than an exclusive one. 

If extravasation occurs, the infusion should be stopped immediately, with aspiration of fluid from the site, needle, and tubing as much as possible. The affected limb or area should be elevated (if possible). The site should be documented photographically as well as the time, date, site, patient complaints, and estimated volume of extravasated drug.36 Both hot and cold packs have been used to manage extravasations, but use of the proper therapy for certain agents is critical. For example, warm compresses have been shown to worsen doxorubicin extravasations, whereas cold packs may exacerbate vinca alkaloid... 

Alternatively, TLC plates can also be scanned in the densitometer. This device reads the plate and produces an output similar to a UV scan of the plate. The densitometer is extremely sensitive and it is also nondestructive. A plate can be scanned, the data stored, and then derivatized and documented photographically. An example of a densitometer is shown in Fig. 13.9. 

For the identity test, the plate is dipped for 3 s in the derivatization reagent, dried for 15 min in a cold current of air, allowed to stand for 2 h at room temperature and then documented photographically or measured with a TLC scanner. 

The gelation of the reagent and the reaction of the saponins with the erythrocytes should preferably be allowed to take place overnight. The band of adhesive textile material can then be removed, the plate can be documented photographically and the hRf values calculated. Plates coated in this way can then be stored over a period of years without any change in their appearance. 

Selenium is used in Xerography for reproducing and copying documents, letters, etc. It is used by the glass industry to decolorize glass and to make ruby-colored glasses and enamels. It is also used as a photographic toner, and as an additive to stainless steel. 

It is imperative that extensive documentation be kept of any treatment, including photographs duriag all stages of the work. This documentation should then be stored to be available for consultation ia the future, whea a reaewed coaservatioa assessmeat of the object may be aecessary. 

Instant photographs are widely used for identification purposes, for example, for drivers Hcenses, student identification cards, and credit cards that can be issued immediately. Most passport photographs generated in the United States are instant color prints. Industrial and business appHcations include photographs of record for insurance purposes, constmction documentation, and real estate photography.

On a still larger scale, the making of full-size Polacolor repHcas of works of art provides accurate images for display and for professional study and documentation (see Fine art examination and conservation). Because these do not involve photographic reduction and enlargement, the 1 1 repHcas maintain the fine detail and dimensional relationships of the original subjects.

This method of chromatogram preservation has lost a great deal of its importance with the increasing perfection of photographic methods, particularly since true-colored, instant, paper and slide positives have become available. Photography is the more rapid method of documentation if suitable photographic equipment is available. 

Color reproduction of the chromatograms can be achieved by color photography — the best, but also the most expensive method of documenting thin-layer chromatograms. It can be used not only to produce true-color reproductions of colored zones but also — with the aid of a Reprostar (Fig. 64) or a UVIS analysis lamp (Fig. 6) — of fluorescent or fluorescence-quenched zones.
