Diuretic senna

In constipation, action similar to Senna, and sometimes preferred to the latter rarely gripes. Occasionally prescribed with diuretics, etc., for gravel and dropsy. Combined with tonics and stomachics such as Gentian and Calumba root, makes a first-rate family medicine. Dose, wineglass of the ounce to pint infusion. 

Clinically important, potentially hazardous interactions with alprazolam, amiodarone, amphotericin B, arbutamine, bendroflumethiazide, benzthiazide, bisacodyl, bumetanide, carbimazole, chlorothiazide, chlorthalidone, cholestyramine, clarithromycin, conivaptan, cyclosporine, cyclothiazide, dan-shen, demeclocycline, devil s claw, dexmedetomidine, doxycycline, erythromycin, esomeprazole, ethacrynic acid, flunisolide, furosemide, ginseng, glycopyrrolate, glycopyrronium, hawthorn (fruit, leaf, flower extract), horsetail, hydrochlorothiazide, hydroflumethiazide, indapamide, licorice, lopinavir, mepenzolate, methyclothiazide, metolazone, minocycline, mistletoe, oxprenolol, oxytetracycline, paroxetine, phenylbutazone, polythiazide, propafenone, propantheline, quinethazone, quinidine, rabeprazole, rifampin, roxithromycin, sarsaparilla, senna, Siberian ginseng, squill, St John s wort, telithromycin, teriparatide, tetracycline, thiazide diuretics, tolvaptan, trichlormethiazide, verapamil... 

For example, a patient who takes cascara—a laxative for constipation—and senna—also a laxative—along with Digoxin—which is used to treat an irregular heart rhythm—can develop a toxicity. Likewise, taking juniper—a diuretic that causes increased urination—and dandelion—also a diuretic—along with... 

Concomitant use of senna or sickle-pod senna is cautioned with antiarrhythmic drugs, thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids, licorice, and botanicals containing cardiac glycosides, as long-term use of senna or sickle-pod senna as a laxative can cause or exacerbate potassium loss (Brinker 2001 De Smet 1993 ESCOP 2003).
