Shifts of Energy Levels

The chemical and physical state of an element affects the binding energy of its electrons, as mentioned in Chapter 2.1.2.3.3, p. 242. Energy level shifts can be followed with the help of X-ray transitions they are also directly measured by photoelectron spectroscopy. The subject was treated in [1, 5]. Shifts of inner levels may be observed as shown in various papers quoted in [2]. Energy level shift measurements and their application to surface state problems are discussed in [3]. As an example, Pd Mg level energy values from this reference are given below  [Pg.208]

The energy difference I/ , -F2I=2 V12 is known as Davydov or exciton splitting, Figure 8.3. The shift of energy levels gives rise to new bands in the absorption spectrum denoted as the upper and lower Davydov (exciton) components. These components are the H- and J-bands observed in absorption spectra of molecular aggregates. [Pg.142]

The shift of energy levels can be done before solving the secular equation by subtracting the same increment from the diagonal elements. [Pg.429]

In Section 1.3 the shift of the single molecule excitation line under the influence of a static electric field, the DC Stark effect, is discussed. The interaction of molecular electronic energy levels with a strong optical field is also expected to lead to level shifts and splittings and additionally to a change of relaxation rates. The shift of energy levels under optical excitation is called light shift or AC Stark effect where... [Pg.61]

Another possibility of wavelength tuning is based on the shift of energy levels in the active medium by external pertmbations, which cause a corresponding spectral shift of the gain profile and therefore of the laser wavelength. This level shift may be effected by an external magnetic field... [Pg.314]
