The molecular weight distribution of cell wall polysaccharides was estimated by gel filtration with a TOSOH TSK gel G4000 PWXL (7.8 x 300 mm) column equilibrated and eluted with 0.05 M sodium acetate, 0.01 M EDTA, 0.05 M NaCl (pH 5.0) in polyuronide and 0.05 M sodium citrate, 0.1 M NaCl (pH 5.5) in the hemicellulose fraction. Samples (1 mg/ml) of 100 ml were injected. The eluate was monitored by a refractive index detector (Shimadzu R1D-6A, Kyoto, Japan) and collected at the fraction size of 0.4 ml. [Pg.592]

It is well known that the structure, distribution and properties of protolignin in cell walls vary according to cell type and morphological location. This is based upon extensive studies on topochemical properties of lignin using various methods such as ultraviolet microscopic photometry (1,2), bromination-SEM-EDXA (3) and other physical or chemical analyses of isolated tissue fractions (4). [Pg.160]

Table 10. Distribution of amino acids (residues/1000) in cell contents and cell walls of 6 species of diatoms from various habitats. Column a distribution in cell contents Column b cell walls. Bottom of table emphasizes the difference (Column b - Column a) between cell-wall composition and cell contents for those amino acids which show consistent trends. The sponge spicules are from Ctiona celata, and the sponge tissue is from an unidentified siliceous sponge. AA amino acids HA hexosamines... [Pg.83]

K. Striking is the broad distribution of jump times of water in cell walls coextending from times of liquid water to ice. We can compare water in cell walls with supercooled water with a broad scale of mobilities. The reduction of the apparent T may be induced by the interaction water/mucopolysaccharid groups. Water in charcoal with mean pore radius of 13 A shows a broader distribution of t but with a... [Pg.158]

As shown in Table HI, sucrose enters nutritionally normal cells only to a slightly greater extent than dextran and inulin, which are confined to the extracellular compartment. The small differences between these values may arise from the more complete distribution of sucrose in cell wall interstices. In contrast, glycerol, a substance which is known to enter many cells rapidly and which does not stimu-... [Pg.127]
