Columns distillation types

Referring to Figure 2.2 for MVC column configuration, the model equations for the rectifying section are the same (except the reboiler equations) as those presented for conventional batch distillation column (Type III, IV, V in section 4.2). The model equations for the stripping section are the same (except the condenser equations) as those presented for inverted batch distillation column (Type III, IV, V in section 4.3.2). However, note that the vapour and liquid flow rates in the rectifying and stripping sections will not be same because of the introduction of the feed plate. [Pg.96]

Because fatty acids, and especially unsaturated fatty acids, have limited stabiHty when subjected to high temperatures, most distillations are carried out in continuous distillation columns as opposed to batch-type distillations. Almost all distillations are carried out under vacuum and sometimes with the... [Pg.91]

The use of high or low limits for process variables is another type of selective control, called an override. The feature of anti-reset windup in feedback controllers is a type of override. Another example is a distillation column with lower and upper limits on the heat input to the column reboiler. The minimum level ensures that liquid will remain... [Pg.733]

The separation operation called distillation utihzes vapor and hquid phases at essentially the same temperature and pressure for the coexisting zones. Various lands of devices such as r andom or sti uctui ed packings and plates or tr ays are used to bring the two phases into intimate contact. Trays are stacked one above the other and enclosed in a cyhndrical shell to form a column. Pacldngs are also generally contained in a cyhndrical shell between hold-down and support plates. A typical tray-type distillation column plus major external accessories is shown schematically in Fig. 13-1. [Pg.1242]

When multicomponent mixtures are to be separated into three or more products, sequences of simple distillation columns of the type shown in Fig. 13-1 are commonly used. For example, if aternaiy mixture is to be separated into three relatively pure products, either of the two sequences in Fig. 13-4 can be used. In the direct sequence, shown in Fig. 13-4, all products but the heaviest are removed one by one as distillates. The reverse is true for the indirect sequence, shown in Fig. 13-4 7. The number of possible sequences of simple distillation columns increases rapidly with the number of products. Thus, although only the 2 sequences shown in Fig. 13-4 are possible for a mixture separated into 3 products, 14 different sequences, one of which is shown in Fig. 13-5, can be synthesized when 5 products are to be obtained. [Pg.1243]

The sequencing of distillation columns and other types of equipment for the separation of multicomponent mixtures has received much attention in recent years. Although one separator of complex design can sometimes be devised to produce more than two produc ts, more... [Pg.1247]

A distillation column is composed of two types of stages. Those above the inlet of fresh material terminate in a condenser, and are called tire rectifying ... [Pg.357]

Refinery product separation falls into a number of common classes namely Main fractionators gas plants classical distillation, extraction (liquid-liquid), precipitation (solvent deasphalting), solid facilitated (Parex(TM), PSA), and Membrane (PRSIM(TM)). This list has been ordered from most common to least common. Main fractionators are required in every refinery. Nearly every refinery has some type of gas plant. Most refineries have classical distillation columns. Liquid-liquid extraction is in a few places. Precipitation, solid facilitated and membrane separations are used in specific applications. [Pg.242]

Note that these values for theoretical trays do contain corrections in overall efficiency, and hence are not the actual trays for the binary distillation column. Efficiencies generally run 50-60% for systems of this type which will yield a column of actual trays almost twice the theoretical at the operating reflux. [Pg.40]

Center-Fed Column Crystallizers Two types of center-fed column crystallizers are illustrated on Figs. 20-8 and 20-9. As in a simple distillation column, these devices are composed of three distinct sections a freezing or recovery section, where solute is frozen from the... [Pg.7]

The principle of the perfectly-mixed stirred tank has been discussed previously in Sec. 1.2.2, and this provides essential building block for modelling applications. In this section, the concept is applied to tank type reactor systems and stagewise mass transfer applications, such that the resulting model equations often appear in the form of linked sets of first-order difference differential equations. Solution by digital simulation works well for small problems, in which the number of equations are relatively small and where the problem is not compounded by stiffness or by the need for iterative procedures. For these reasons, the dynamic modelling of the continuous distillation columns in this section is intended only as a demonstration of method, rather than as a realistic attempt at solution. For the solution of complex distillation problems, the reader is referred to commercial dynamic simulation packages. [Pg.129]

It should be emphasized that the factors in Table 2.2 are average and only approximate and will vary, amongst other things, according to the type of equipment. As an example, consider the effect of materials of construction on the capital cost of distillation columns. Table 2.3 gives materials of construction cost factors for distillation columns. [Pg.19]

Reboilers are required for distillation columns to vaporize a fraction of the bottom product, as discussed in Chapter 9. It may also be the case that a liquid needs to be vaporized for other purposes, for example, a liquid feed needs to be vaporized before entering a reactor. The discussion here will focus on reboiling a distillation column, but the same principles apply to other types of vaporizers. [Pg.342]

The demethanizer distillation column of an ethylene process works at extremely low temperatures. The feed is cooled with extremely small temperature differences of the order of 1°C to minimize the refrigeration costs associated with the cooling. What type of heat exchanger would you expect to be used for this duty ... [Pg.355]
