Where a large number of stages is required, it may be necessary to split a column into two separate columns to reduce the height of the column, even though the required separation could, theoretically, have been obtained in a single column. This may also be done in vacuum distillations, to reduce the column pressure drop and limit the bottom temperatures. [Pg.517]

In vacuum distillation, excessive pressure drop causes excessive bottom temperatures which, in turn, increase degradation, polymerization, coking, and fouling, and also loads up the column, vacuum system, and reboiler. In the suction of a compressor, excessive pressure drop increases the compressor size and energy usage. Such services attempt to minimize tray pressure drop. Methods for estimating pressure drops are similar for most conventional trays. The total pressure drop across a tray is given by... [Pg.42]

DMSO is not stable at its boiling point and should be distilled at low pressure (about 20 mmHg is suitable). Since it has a high value of a with most contaminants, the column is likely to be short and the reflirx ratio low so the column pressure drop will not be large. [Pg.408]

W The feed to a sieve-tray distillation column operating at 1 atm is 700 Ibmol/hr of 45 mol% benzene and 55 mol% toluene at 1 atm and its bubble-point temperature of 201°F. The distillate contains 92 mol% benzene and boils at 179°F. The bottoms product contains 95 mol% toluene and boUs at 227T. The column has 23 trays spaced 18 in. apart, and its reflux ratio is 1.25. Column pressure drop is neglected. Tray efficiency is 80%. Estimate the total bare-module cost of the column, condenser, reflux accumulator, combined reflux and distillate pump, reboiler, and reboiler pump. Also, estimate the total permanent investment Results should be computed using (1) the equations in Chapter 16, and (2) Aspen IPE (Icarus Process Evaluator). Compare the results. [Pg.559]

A 42-stage distillation column separating methanol and water in a methanol-from-syngas process is used as an example of a more typically complex process. In the normal control stmcture, the temperature of a tray in the column is controlled by manipulating reboiler duty. However, there is a high column pressure-drop override controller to prevent flooding the column. Both of these controllers are PI and both can exhibit reset windup. [Pg.479]

As previously stated, atmospheric distillations in this chapter are considered to be those distillations operating at column pressures above 0.4 atm and less than 5.5 atm absolute. In this pressure range, the column pressure drop usually is small compared to the system pressure. Also the... [Pg.185]

Packed vs Plate Columns. Relative to plate towers, packed towers are more useful for multipurpose distillations, usually in small (under 0.5 m) towers or for the following specific appHcations severe corrosion environment where some corrosion-resistant materials, such as plastics, ceramics, and certain metaUics, can easily be fabricated into packing but may be difficult to fabricate into plates vacuum operation where a low pressure drop per theoretical plate is a critical requirement high (eg, above 49,000 kg/(hm ) (- 10, 000 lb/(hft )) Hquid rates foaming systems or debottlenecking plate towers having plate spacings that are relatively close, under 0.3 m. [Pg.174]

Distillation Applications Packings are now routinely considered for distillation columns with diameters up to 10 m or more. The pressure drop advantages of the modern, through-flow random pack-... [Pg.1398]

Once packing heights are determined in other sections from HETP (distillation) or Koa (absorption), the height allowances for the internals (from Figure 1) can be added to determine the overall column height. Column diameter is determined in sections on capacity and pressure drop for the selected packing (random dumped or structured). [Pg.76]
