One of the most important public health tasks in the immediate aftermath of a disaster is to conduct a rapid and comprehensive assessment of population health requirements. Responders should conduct a health assessment of the community as soon as possible within the first few days following the event (Connolly, 2005). This is a multifaceted process that consists of several key elements (1) data collection for assessment of needs, (2) identification of available resources that match to defined needs, (3) prevention of further adverse health effects associated with the event, (4) implementation of disease control strategies, (5) evaluation of the effectiveness of the application of these strategies, and (6) improvement in contingency planning for future disasters. [Pg.182]

Despite the success of vaccines, their use in the absence of a comprehensive disease control strategy may allow the entry of other pathogens. This may well have happened with enteric redmouth (ERM) vaccines in rainbow trout whereby the apparent failure of a previously effective product in the UK heralded the arrival of what transpired to be a new biogroup of Y. ruckeri, biogroup 2 (Austin et al, 2005). A parallel situation occurred with Atlantic salmon culture in Tasmania whereby the standard ERM vaccine lost effectiveness, and led to an improved product involving the trypsinization of the component culture to expose the O-antigen and... [Pg.225]

Just as our best scientists have been working for decades to find a cure for cancer, the cancer of drugs is now an illness in need of a medical cure. This line of thinking was made explicit in the 2001 National Drug Control Strategy report, which reported [j)]ust like other chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and cancer, for which medications have been developed, drug addiction is a disease that merits medication for its treatment. " ... [Pg.19]

In actuality, this has been far from the case. Antibiotic therapy, although an important component of mastitis control strategy, is much less effective than could be desired. Farm advisors uniformly stress the principle that treatment must not be relied upon to redress the disease promoting effects of bad animal husbandry, unsanitary milking practices and defective milking machinery. [Pg.24]
