Discover Liberty

Waldo Semon was responsible for bringing many of the PVC products to market. As a young scientist at BF Goodrich, he worked on ways to synthesize rubber and to bind the rubber to metal. In his spare time, he discovered that PVC, when mixed with certain liquids, gave an elastic-like, pliable material that was rainproof, fire resistant, and did not conduct electricity. Under the trade name Koroseal, the rubbery material came into the marketplace, beginning around 1926, as shower curtains, raincoats, and umbrellas. During World War II, PVC became the material of choice to protest electrical wires for the Air Force and Navy. Another of his inventions was the SR patented under the name Ameripol that was dubbed liberty rubber since it replaced NR in the production of tires, gas masks, and other military equipment. Ameripol was a butadiene-type material. [Pg.195]

Most Liberty Caps do not blue, but some do so heavily. At this point, we don t know whether the latter are another species. Some mushrooms recently collected are quite similar in appearance to Ps. semilanceata and inhabit the same cow fields. These may be variants or other new species of those that look like Liberty Caps and grow on pastures, none is poisonous. (A recently discovered psilocybian mushroom that is similar is known as Ps. linaformens and is common in Europe and Oregon, where it too is often called a "Liberty Cap. )... [Pg.350]

And like California, New York had its spectacular groundwater contamination. During the war, wells near two aircraft plants on Long Island were closed when they were polluted with chromium. The two factories discovered their problems in very different ways. At Liberty Aircraft, county health officials who observed chromium wastes poured into a pit took the precaution of testing a nearby private well. The well was closed when its water was found to contain ioo parts per billion of chromium. But the second case, one year later, was detected only when workers at a Grumman Aircraft plant in Bethpage noticed yellow water in their drinking fountains. [Pg.114]

If we consider Mercury, they that work in the Mines in Spain, teach us hy their Theft, that more than a pound of it may he taken inwards without harm for, a little before they give over working, they swallow a good quantity of it, which, when they are at liberty, they ease themselves of by Stool, and so keep it to sell in secret. And this the Overseers having discovered, do now force every Workman to stay there a considerable time, after his giving over working, that these Mercurial Thieves may be so forced to leave their theft behind them. But, if by the virtue of Chymical Dissolvants, you open the body of Quick-silver, it will produce in very small Doses, such various and wonderful Effects, that out of it alone, may be had Remedies to answer all the Indications of Physick. [Pg.185]

The Liberty system is a sequential peptide synthesizer capable of complete automated synthesis, including cleavage, of up to twelve different peptides. The system uses the Discover single-mode microwave reactor that has been widely used in organic synthesis. [Pg.906]

CEM also offers a manual peptide synthesizer. Discover SPS (Fig. 20.7). This system is also based on the Discover microwave reactor. It uses a 25 mL polypropylene SPE cartridge that is held in place in the reactor. Fiber-optic temperature monitoring is included in the system and enables control of microwave power delivery. A vacuum manifold station is provided that enables rapid washing and filtration of reagents during the cycle. The system can be upgraded to the automated Liberty. [Pg.907]

If quick-lime is mixed with a dissolved alkali it shows an attraction for fixed air superior to that of the alkali. It robs this salt of its air, and thereby becomes mild itself, while the alkali is consequently rendered more corrosive, or discovers its natural degree of acrimony or strong attraction for water which attraction was less perceivable as long as it was saturated with air. And the volatile alkali [ammonium carbonate] when deprived of its air, besides this attraction for various bodies, discovers likewise its natural degree of volatility, which was formerly somewhat repressed by the air adhering to it, in the same manner as it is repressed by the addition of an acid ... as the calcarious earths and alkalis attract acids strongly and can be saturated with them, so they also attract fixed air, and are in their ordinary state saturated with it and when we mix an acid with an alkali or earth, the air is set at liberty. . . because the alkaline body attracts it more weakly than it does the acid, and because the acid and air cannot both be joined to the same body at the same time. ... [Pg.81]

If in addition to the consideration of a plurality of civil lists, we take into view the number of persons who must necessarily be employed to guard the inland communication, between the different confederacies, against illicit trade, and who in time will infallibly spring up out of the necessities of revenue and if we also take into view the military establishments, which it has been shewn would unavoidably result from the jealousies and conflicts of the several nations, into which the States would be divided, we shall clearly discover, that a separation would be not less injurious to the oeconomy than to the tranquillity, commerce, revenue and liberty of every part. [Pg.59]
