Outsourcing has been an important issue for decades. It has been investigated from different perspectives due to its multi discipline nature. Three main streams of approaches are often discussed logistics strategy and SCM theory transaction cost theory and the Resource Based View. Table 2 summarizes the results of a literature survey on reasons/considerations for logistics outsourcing from these theoretical approaches. 

We attempt to delineate between surface physical chemistry and surface chemical physics and solid-state physics of surfaces. We exclude these last two subjects, which are largely wave mechanical in nature and can be highly mathematical they properly form a discipline of their own.

This entire book is about the emergence, nature and cultivation of a new discipline, materials science and engineering. To draw together the strings of this story, it helps to be clear about what a scientific discipline actually is that, in turn, becomes clearer if one looks at the emergence of some earlier disciplines which have had more time to reach a condition of maturity. Comparisons can help in definition we can narrow a vague concept by examining what apparently diverse examples have in common. 

Rapid advances in understanding the nature and behaviour of materials required both kinds of skill, in measurement and in theory, acting in synergy among metallurgists, this only came to be recognised fully around the middle of the twentieth century, at about the same time as materials science became established as a new discipline. 

This petroleum and natural gas engineering two-volume handbook is written in the spirit of the classic handbooks of other engineering disciplines. The two volumes reflect the importance of the industry its engineers serve (i.e., Standard and Poor s shows that the fuels sector is the largest single entity in the gross domestic product) and the profession s status as a mature engineering discipline. 

The specific petroleum engineering discipline chapters cover drilling and well completions, reservoir engineering, production, and economics and valuation. These chapters contain information, data, and example calculations related to practical situations that petroleum engineers often encounter. Also, these chapters reflect the growing role of natural gas in industrial operations by integrating natural gas topics and related subjects throughout both volumes. 

The intended audience of the second volume entitled Chemical Thermodynamics Advanced Applications is the advanced student or research scientist. We have used it, independently of the first volume, as the text for an advanced topics graduate level course in chemical thermodynamics. It can also serve as an introduction to thermodynamic studies involving more specialized disciplines, including geology, chemical separations, and biochemistry, for the research scientist in or outside of those disciplines. We hope it will be especially helpful for non-thermodynamicists who might be unfamiliar with the power and utility of thermodynamics in diverse applications. Given the more advanced nature of the material covered here, problems are only provided at the end of the chapters in this volume. Taken together, the two volumes make an excellent reference source for chemical thermodynamics. 

The competence of the mentors, as college teachers, is invariably strongest in one or another of the traditional disciplines, and instruction of students has generally been through courses in one discipline without explicit reference to another. Yet the need for global change instruction is for help in understanding a multidisciplinary set of problems. Some appear to lie mainly in the natural sciences while others deal more with humanity, but all should be studied in a broad framework that embraces both science and humanities. How to achieve...
