Directive on the Landfill of Waste

A compliance leaching test for granular waste material has been published (prEN 12457) which describes three different procedures shake test at liquid/solid (L/S) ratio = 2, L/S = 10 and a two-step shake test at L/S = 2 and 10. The leachant used is demineralized water. It is likely that the standard will be validated. The driving force behind this standard was the draft European Directive on the landfill of waste. [Pg.185]

Land disposal sites result in soil contamination through leachate migration. The composition of the substances produced depends principally on the type of wastes present and the decomposition in the landfill (aerobic or anaerobic). The adjacent soil can be contaminated by direct horizontal leaching of surface runoff vertical leaching and transfer of gases from decomposition by diffusion and convection. The disposal of... [Pg.43]

LATS is a market-based mechanism that introduces progressively tighter restrictions on the amount of paper, food and garden waste that authorities can landfill. Local authorities are allocated an annual landfill allowance for municipal biodegradable waste. They are under a duty not to exceed this allowance and face punitive fines for every tonne landfilled above the total amount of allowances they hold. EU fines imposed on the UK for failure to meet the targets will be split between local authorities in direct proportion to their contribution in breaching the targets. [Pg.36]

Other regulations related to the safe handling and disposal of waste batteries include Directive 67/548 on the classification of dangerous substances, the Basel convention which addresses the movement of waste, the Directive on Landfill Waste, and the Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste. [Pg.141]
