Currently, there has been only one report in the literature concerning ATRP of 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate (DMAEA) which involved homogeneous (bulk) polymerization (instead of polymer brush) formation [54]. To the authors knowledge, the only LRP technique applied in the s)mthe-sis of PDMAEA polymer brushes is nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization [55-57]. The first synthesis of PDMAEA brushes from Si substrates by SC-ATRP used a CuCl/CuCl2/Me6TREN/2-bromopropionyl type initiator catalyst system and reaction temperature of 70°C. PDMAEA dry layer thicknesses reached 34 5.9 nm after 72 h. [Pg.214]

Poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate], poly(DMAEA) is a pH-sensitive polymer in aqueous solution, as its tertiary amine can be quatemized at low pH, with wide applications in the pharmaceutical and water treatment industries. However, polymerization of DMAEA by RAFT is less studied due to the challenges imposed by the low steric hindrance of its substituents and side reactions of the polar amino group [82,83]. [Pg.263]

FIGURE 12.14 Continuous UV data at 305 nm from ACOMP foUow the evolution of the TTC during 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate (DMAEA)/styrene (sty) copolymerization reactions by RAFT with different initial composition and indicate that the degradation process is slower for higher amount of styrene. Shown in the inset to figure are the plotted TTC decomposition rate constants versus styrene %. The rates were from exponential fits used as first-order approximations. The effect of solvent on the polymer conformation is illustrated in Figure 14.12, in the case of poly(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl acrylate), poly(DMAEA) solutions in water and DMF [52], The almost zero slope in Kdl versus sin (0/2) for the polymer solution in DMF, expected for small, well-dissociated polymer chains, measures the small radius of gyration R of the polymer in this solvent, close to detection limits, hi contrast, high R values were obtained for poly(DMAEA) solution in water moreover, the upward curvature in Kdl versus sin (0/2) indicates strong chain asscxiation. At the same time, the intercept of Kdl data at =0 gives the polymer mass, which is much larger in water than in DMF, due to the association of the amphiphilic polymer chains in aqueous media. [Pg.308]

In a subsequent contribution, Raynaud et exploited the potential of NHCl and NHC2 to catalyze the MTS-initiated GTP of a variety of monomers in THF or toluene at room temperature. Monomers include not only acrylics (i.e., butyl acrylate, tert-butyl acrylate, and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate) and methacrylics (methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate), but also an... [Pg.103]

SGI nitroxide was attached to latex particles made of poly(styrene-co-chloromethylstyrene) of 60 nm diameter previously prepared via atom transfer radical addition [83]. Microspheres grafted with the homopolymer poly (2-dimethylamino ethyl acrylate) (PDMAEA), as well as block copolymers poly (styrene-h-DMAEA) and poly(butyl aciylate-h-DMAEA) were prepared by Sl-NMP in DMF at 112 C, with the initial addition of free SGI to ensure polymerization control. [Pg.24]
