Coincident with this new technique for procurement of human bone biopsies was the development of quantitive methods of bone analysis.12 These methods include histochemical analysis of both decalcified and unde-calcified42 48 bone sections, microradiography,44 tetracycline labeling45 and autoradiography.42 The latter two techniques require administration of a tetracycline antibiotic or isotopic tracer prior to procurement of the biopsy. Undecalcified thin sections, prepared with the use of a Jung microtome after the bone core is fixed, dehydrated and embedded in methacrylate,45 are analyzed by intersect and point count methods46 47 which permit three-dimensional assessment.48 49 Tetracycline antibiotics deposit in vivo in sites of bone formation constituting markers which can be studied in undecalcified sections by fluorescence microscopy.45 47 This represents the safest and best tissue time marker for microscopic measurement of bone formation dynamics.

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty using polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) have become a common procedure for treatment of vertebral compression fractures (Layton et al. 2007). Usually, the procedure is performed under fluoroscopy. Up to now, control CT was necessary to confirm correct distribution of PMMA after the procedure. FD-CT renders this control CT uimeces-sary it provides all the information needed. A considerable advantage is the possibility to perform FD-CT in the angiography suite without moving the patient. This allows confirmation of correct needle position prior to PMMA injection as well (Fig. 40.19). Furthermore, in primarily intended mono-pedicular procedures, this allows accurate, three-dimensional assessment of PMMA distribution. This may be helpful for the decision whether an additional needle placement into the contralateral side is required.

Spray Correlations. One of the most important aspects of spray characterization is the development of meaningful correlations between spray parameters and atomizer performance. The parameters can be presented as mathematical expressions that involve Hquid properties, physical dimensions of the atomizer, as well as operating and ambient conditions that are likely to affect the nature of the dispersion. Empirical correlations provide useful information for designing and assessing the performance of atomizers. Dimensional analysis has been widely used to determine nondimensional parameters that are useful in describing sprays. Semi-empirical methods are zero-dimensional, just as force field mefhods are. There is no way of assessing the reliability of a given result within the method. This is due to the selection of a fixed (minimum) basis set. The only way of judging results is by comparing the accuracy of other calculations on similar systems with experimental data.
