Dilling studies

Stigter and Dill [98] studied phospholipid monolayers at the n-heptane-water interface and were able to treat the second and third virial coefficients (see Eq. XV-1) in terms of electrostatic, including dipole, interactions. At higher film pressures, Pethica and co-workers [99] observed quasi-first-order phase transitions, that is, a much flatter plateau region than shown in Fig. XV-6. 

The Henry s law constant value of 2.Ox 10 atm-m /mol at 20°C suggests that trichloroethylene partitions rapidly to the atmosphere from surface water. The major route of removal of trichloroethylene from water is volatilization (EPA 1985c). Laboratory studies have demonstrated that trichloroethylene volatilizes rapidly from water (Chodola et al. 1989 Dilling 1977 Okouchi 1986 Roberts and Dandliker 1983). Dilling et al. (1975) reported the experimental half-life with respect to volatilization of 1 mg/L trichloroethylene from water to be an average of 21 minutes at approximately 25 °C in an open container. Although volatilization is rapid, actual volatilization rates are dependent upon temperature, water movement and depth, associated air movement, and other factors. A mathematical model based on Pick s diffusion law has been developed to describe trichloroethylene volatilization from quiescent water, and the rate constant was found to be inversely proportional to the square of the water depth (Peng et al. 1994).

Overall, in 234 ready-to-eat foods tested 37 times each as part of the FDA Total Diet Studies from 1982 to 1991, endrin was found only 26 times at an average concentration of 0.0027 pg/g (2.7 ppb) in 9 different foods broccoli, cantaloupe, collards, cucumbers, onion rings, dill pickles, pumpkin pie, summer squash, and winter squash (KAN-DO Office and Pesticides Team 1995). Concentrations ranged from 0.0011 pg/g (1.1 ppb) (broccoli) to 0.0041 pg/g (4.1 ppb) (summer squash). In a summary of 1985-91 FDA pesticide residue findings, endrin was not reported in more than 10,000 surveillance samples of domestic and imported foods that may be eaten by infants or children, or in more than 4,000 analyses of Total Diet Study foods eaten by infants and children (Yess et al. 1993). 

Negative atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APC) low-energy collision activation mss spectrometry has also been employed for the characterization of flavonoids in extracts of fresh herbs. Besides the separation, quantitative determination and identification of flavonoids, the objective of the study was the comparison of the efficacy of the various detection systems in the analysis of flavonoids in herb extracts. Freeze-dried herbs (0.5g of chives, cress, dill, lovage, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, tarragon and thyme) were ground and extracted with 20 ml of 62.5 per cent aqueous methanol. The Diels Alder reaction, involving the [4 + 2]-cycloaddition of an unsaturated group (di-enophile) to a 1,3-diene, has been studied for the synthesis of ladder polymers, such as the reaction of 2-vinyl-l,3-butadiene with benzoquinone [Bailey, 1972] (Eq. 2-247). Perhaps the most exacting TLC studies were carried out by Simon et al43. phenytoin was extracted frcm plasma, concentrated by evaporation, and subjected to TLC on silica gel plates. After the phenytoin spot was scraped off, the colorimetric procedure of Dill et al4 was applied directly to the scrapings. Phenytoin levels of 5 ug/ml or more could be recognized by visual inspection of the plates under ultraviolet light, and serum levels of 1 ug/ml were detectable with the colorimetric procedure.
