Dilatant definition

It has been shown (16) that a stable foam possesses both a high surface dilatational viscosity and elasticity. In principle, defoamers should reduce these properties. Ideally a spread duplex film, one thick enough to have two definite surfaces enclosing a bulk phase, should eliminate dilatational effects because the surface tension of an iasoluble, one-component layer does not depend on its thickness. This effect has been verified (17). SiUcone antifoams reduce both the surface dilatational elasticity and viscosity of cmde oils as iUustrated ia Table 2 (17). The PDMS materials are Dow Coming Ltd. polydimethylsiloxane fluids, SK 3556 is a Th. Goldschmidt Ltd. siUcone oil, and FC 740 is a 3M Co. Ltd. fluorocarbon profoaming surfactant.

The linearity definition is on the slide. As long as the measurement result versus the analyte concentration fits a straight line we call this linearity. In an ideal case hnearity could extend over several orders of magnitude. This is, for example, the case for certain elements when determined by ICP-OES. In other cases it can be less than one order of magnitnde. Linearity over a large concentration can be very time saving, becanse fewer dilation steps might be necessary (see also chapter 9).

A fluid packet, like a solid, can experience motion in the form of translation and rotation, and strain in the form of dilatation and shear. Unlike a solid, which achieves a certain finite strain for a given stress, a fluid continues to deform. Therefore we will work in terms of a strain rate rather than a strain. We will soon derive the relationships between how forces act to move and strain a fluid. First, however, we must establish some definitions and kinematic relationships.

For a limited discussion of fractal geometry, some simple descriptive definitions should suffice. Self-similarity is a characteristic of basic fractal objects. As described by Mandelbrot 58 When each piece of a shape is geometrically similar to the whole, both the shape and the cascade that generate it are called self-similar. Another term that is synonymous with self-similarity is scale-invariance, which also describes shapes that remain constant regardless of the scale of observation. Thus, the self-similar or scale-invariant macromolecular assembly possesses the same topology, or pattern of atomic connectivity, 62 in small as well as large segments. Self-similar objects are thus said to be invariant under dilation. 

Primary angiitis of the CNS causes inflammation particularly in small leptomeningeal vessels, whereas larger vessels can also be affected. If definitive clarification of cholestasis has still not been reached (even with MRC imaging), dilated bile ducts indicate an ERC or, if this is technically impossible, a PTC. The diagnostic sensitivity is 60-70%, the specificity 90-95 (-100)%.
