To describe polymers or polymer blends with greater precision, the qualifiers listed in Table 1.6 have been suggested (Jenkins et al. 1993). In a series of four papers, Wilks (1997a-d) has compared the polymer nomenclature styles and structure representation systems used by Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), the lUPAC, and MDL Information Systems, Inc. (MDL). [Pg.19]

Alzheimer s Disease. Figure 1 A(3 monomers can self-associate to form dimers, trimers and higher oligomers. Globular structures of synthetic A(342 are known as A(3-derived diffusible ligands (ADDLs) (3-12-mers of A(3). These structures are similar to the smallest protofibrils and represent the earliest macromolecular assembly of synthetic A(3. The characteristic amyloid fiber exhibits a high beta-sheet content and is derived in vitro by a nucleation-dependent self-association and an associated conformational transition from random to beta-sheet conformation of the A(3 molecule. Intermediate protofibrils in turn self-associate to form mature fibers. [Pg.66]

Con A by the mannoside cluster at concentrations slightly above the nanomolar range, according to a mannose-dependent and partially reversible process. Finally, these results suggested that, rather than an increased avidity for Con A, the unusual potency of these molecular glycoasterisks was due to an efficient and kinetically controlled macromolecular assembly that strongly amplified the effect of these low-valency ligands. [Pg.201]

One would assume that the mechanism for delivery of the nucleocapsid through the membrane of the intracellular vacuole has to be provided by the virus. There are no known precedents in normal cell physiology for the passage of macromolecular assemblies like the viral nucleocapsids into the cytoplasm. The most likely mechanism would be fusion of the viral envelope with the vacuolar membrane and subsequent release of the nucleocapsid into the cytoplasm. But if penetration occurs by fusion why would this occur intracellularly and not at the cell surface The clue comes from the low pH dependence of the infection. [Pg.102]

It is worth to mention that this definition is not always consistent with the nature of the macromolecular assembly when applying to nucleic acids. For example, from all different types of quadruplex nucleic acids only quadruplex monomers are covered by lUPAC definition of tertiary structure being a single chain of DNA or RNA. However, also the quadruplexes with higher molecularity of the formed structures (dimers, tetramers) belong to this important tertiary structure family. [Pg.46]
