The mechanisms whereby several chemical antioxidants appear to substitute for vitamin E in several physiological situations has interested many investigators. The antioxidant ethoxyquin EMQ (6-ethoxy-l,2-dihydro-2,2,4-trimethyl quinoline) has attracted particular attention in recent years, particularly since its approval for use in animal feeds in the United States. Here also the use of carbon labeling should provide a useful tool for studying this antioxidant in biological systems.

While HNBRs have much better stability to oxygen and ozone attack than NBRs, there is still the need to stabilize the compounds for oxygen attack and, possibly depending on the application, ozone attack. Studies by Zeon Chemicals [13] have shown that polymerized l,2-dihydro-2,2,4-trimethyl quinoline (trade names such as Agerite Resin D, Flectol H, and Naugard Q) at levels from 1.5 to 3.0 phr were very effective in both oxygen and dynamic ozone protection of peroxide vulcanized HNBR. Ethoxy quin (EMQ) [quinoline, 6-ethoxy-l,2-dihydro-2,2,4-trimethyl 91-53-2] has been used in animal feeds and the carry-over in animals is limited to 5 ppm. EMQ is allowed in paprika and chili powder at 100 ppm. Nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA), allowed prior to 1968, is now illegal and foods containing it are deemed adulterated. 

Alkylated diphenylamines (11) and derivatives of both dihydroquinoline (12) and polymerized 2,2,4-trimethyl-l,2-dihydroquinoline [26780-96-1] (13) develop less color than the />-phenylenediamines and are classified as senhstaining antioxidants. Derivatives of dihydro quinoline are used for the stabilization of animal feed and spices.
