The elastic modulus of ferrocement after matrix cracking depends on that of the reinforcement and is denoted Ej. A malleable substance (from rhe Latin word for hammer ) is one that can be hammered into thin sheets (Fig. B. 11). A ductile substance (from the Latin word for drawing out ) is one that can be drawn out into wires. Copper, for example, is a metal. It conducts electricity, has a luster when polished, and is malleable. It is so ductile that it is readily drawn out to form electrical wires. Sulfur, on the other hand, is a nonmetal. This brittle yellow solid does not conduct electricity, cannot be hammered into thin sheets, and cannot be drawn out into wires. Machine screws (or bolts) require special tools. The combination wrench is one type of hand tool used with machine screws. There are three important types of metallic filter medium wire mesh, sintered powder, and random fiber. Wire mesh comes in a square weave or Dutch twill (woven in parallel diagonal lines). The method of choice for the measurement of resistance when one wishes to avoid potential drops across the contacts is the four-probe method. In this method, four low-resistance contacts are made diagonally (in the shape of a diamond) on the polymer surface using thin wires fixed to the surface by preparations such as silver epoxy (soft cure) or Electrodag. A constant current is passed through two contacts and the potential difference is measured across the other two. From this the resistance or conductivity may be calculated.
