Diagnostic statistics

A number of diagnostic tools for alcoholism have been developed, with the most well known being the American Psychiatric Association s (APA, 2000) Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-IV). The diagnostic criteria are summarised below.

The Diagnostic Statistical Manual, of Mental Disorders, 4th ed. (DSM-FV American Psychiatric Association, 1994), describes this syndrome as discrete episodes of a failure to resist aggressive impulses, resulting in serious assault or destruction in the face of limited provocation. These attacks are accompanied by remorse afterwards. This syndrome usually occurs in males with childhood histories of violence, a family history of arrest, poor occupational records, and low socioeconomic status (SES).

Before leaving the subject of regression analysis, and in particular the use of PCR and PLS algorithms, it is instructive to examine some of the diagnostic statistics often available from their application.

Figure 9.2 shows predicted vx. observed values for a trained model with fitted r = 0.87, with the predictions for a test set overlaid on the training set model. Diagnostic statistics for this model are shown in Table 9.2. By inspection, one can observe that the predictions of the test set are completely in accordance with the model and would be considered good predictions, but because of their small range they would provide a low by the definition given in Equation...

Quantitative model builders can provide diagnostic statistics and indicators of model quality, including Q, errors in prediction of temporal test sets, and distance to model. They can also provide plots of residuals for visual analysis to guide use, and update the models to ensure they are as up-to-date as possible. Ultimately, it is model users who need to translate these quality measures into practical significance. Automation may reduce the workload for model builders and enable them to work more closely with model users to ensure that the practical utility of models is maximised within the contexts of the models quality to predict.

The study of the residuals is very important in diagnostic statistics. Let us return to the general least squares model given in Eq. (6.41). We rewrite it here for a singley variable as follows ... 

Rasch analysis of a data set provides a range of diagnostic statistics. As was the case for item maps, it is not difficult to calculate Rasch fit statistics for both respondents survey items and test items. Review of such statistics allows a targeted monitoring of both how items function, as well as how individuals answer a survey or test. Fit statistics allow researchers to quickly monitor the quality of a data set, and flag problematic issues. For example, 1) Do particular types of items cause misfit 2) Do particular subgroups of students exhibit misfit 3) Does the location of a test item (at the start of a test or end of a test) predict item misfit ... 

A quantitative diagnostic statistic was sought using machine learning algorithms, where the value obtained can vary from 0.5 for random chance to 1.0 for a perfect match. Analysis of the mass spectral data by these algorithms generated values between 0.87 and 1 for the African samples and 0.77 and 0.95 for the entire sample set.

Of the wavefunction-based diagnostics, the only one that has a reasonable correlation with %TAE[T4 + Ts is Tmhlar s Mdiag, which for closed-shell species is effectively the average of HOMO and LUMO natural orbital occupations (as well as the low-n, limit of the HOMO-LUMO correlation entropy).
