In conclusion, the authors of the cited studies all agree that further research into environmental risk assessment of hospital effluents, incorporating different types of substances used in care and diagnostic activities, as well as cleaning operations (pharmaceuticals, detergents, disinfectants, heavy metals, macropollutants), is vital. Moreover, further studies need to be focussed on evaluating the risk posed by pollutant mixtures, and work is needed to validate the predictive models proposed thus far [19, 49], to evaluate chronic toxicity due to PhCs and then-mixtures and to provide experimental data pertaining to specific case studies.

Some researchers and practitioners define their intervention as the program of action they prescribe after their various diagnostic activities. Such naivete can lead to missed opportunities to facilitate growth or even missed acknowledgment of the early stages of a derailed project. The first question asked actually starts the clock on the intervention because it has ramifications for the entire initiative. After all, to quote a former professor of ours who has since passed on. How do students conceptions of chemical equilibrium evolve during the different stages of teaching and as a result of diagnostic activities, POEs and other experiments, analogies, and small group discussion ... 

Prior to the study reported on here, the first author and a colleague experimented for several years in the teaching of chemical equilibrium. This resulted in a lesson sequence with laboratory activities, simulations, diagnostic activities, learning journals, and other components, most of which had been tried out and revised based on experience. Several elements of the sequence were adapted from van Driel (1990). A 35 item pre-post test went through several revisions its validity with Philippine students was checked using interviews and assignments. The lesson sequence consisted of six lessons of two weekly 3 hour sessions each, for a total of 36 hours. 

It has been proposed that these nanometer- and micrometer-sized particles may have applications in biology in sensing and imaging applications or as delivery vehicles (De et al, 2008). The unique properties of nanoparticles such as their similar size to biomolecules such as proteins and polynucleic acids, as well as their ability to be tuned to contain a range of functional materials such as metal centers, dye molecules, etc. make them attractive candidates for biological and materials applications. The applicable of these nanoparticle platforms for therapeutic and diagnostic activities relies on the functionalization and also encapsulation potential of these materials. 

If a control loop is not performing satisfactorily, then troubleshooting is necessary to identify the source of the problem. This diagnostic activity should be based on a systems approach that considers the overall performance of the control loop as well as the performance of individual components. Retuning the controller is not a cure-all, especially if a sensor or a control valve is the source of the problem. Automated monitoring techniques for control loops are currently being developed and are commercially available (see Chapter 21).
