Dextrose advantage

Pure dextrose is sometimes used as a food ingredient. It has roughly half the sweetness of sucrose. In Europe, the use of dextrose is not particularly attractive commercially however, in other parts of the world it use can be economically advantageous. [Pg.108]

Invert sugar. Invert sugar, sometimes referred to as partially inverted refiner s syrup, is produced by acid or enzymic hydrolysis of the disaccharide sucrose into its 2004 component pails of fructose and dextrose (glucose). Invert syrups usually contain a mixture of sucrose, fructose and dextrose. The main advantage of such a syrup is the reduced likelihood of crystallisation and an increase in osmolality, which may be useful in reducing spoilage risk. [Pg.134]

Dextrose monohydrate is sometimes used as an alternative to sucrose in chewing gum, and in some countries this substitution is economically advantageous. The endothermic heat of solution of dextrose gives a cooling sensation in the mouth, a property that goes well with mint flavours but not with others. [Pg.126]

Despite not being strictly a lipid formulation, data for the preparation of amphotericin B in fat emulsion (Intralipid) instead of 5% glucose is controversial, and its use is currently not recommended. Although several studies have shown that its use is associated with decreased nephrotoxicity when compared to amphotericin in 5% dextrose [130-135], others did not reveal any significant advantage over the conventional formulation [136, 137]. Furthermore, a safety and efficacy review for AmB in Intralipid has been conducted by Sievers TM et al and revealed no advantages for its use in systemic fungal infections [138]. Possible advantages of intraperitoneal versus subcutaneous insulin include the avoidance of erratic absorption (both rate and extent of absorption), convenience, avoidance of subcutaneous injection site-related complications, and prevention of peripheral hyperinsulinemia. Insulin appears to be cleared into the systemic compartment by an active transport process, or via the peritoneal lymphatics. A number of studies have demonstrated the bioavailability of intraperitoneal insufin to be about 25% to 30%, although none clearly compares the clinical effectiveness of intraperitoneal versus subcutaneous insufin in diabetes control. Insufin requirements for PD patients may be greater than in hemodialysis patients because of the continued absorption of dextrose from the peritoneal cavity. Furthermore, because of adsorption of insufin to the polyvinyl chloride bag and administration set, the intraperitoneal dose of insufin often needs to be two to three times the subcutaneous maintenance dose. [Pg.867]

D.E. type has advantages due to its humectant properties and extra sweetness. Up to 25% of the total sweetener may also be in the form of refined corn sugar, which promotes sweetness, and reduces viscosity of the batch, enabling faster moisture evaporation and prolonging shelf life because of its hygroscopic character. However, a high ratio of dextrose to sucrose may cause graining in the piece due to the relatively low solubility of the former (10).
