Dexon

PolyglycoUc acid sutures are sold in the United States under the trade names Dexon II and Dexon "S". Dexon II is coated with polycaprolate (3), a copolymer of caprolactone [502-44-3] and glycoUde. The sutures are claimed to retain approximately 35% of their out-of-package tensile strength three... [Pg.267]

Poliglecaprone-25 is a copolymer of 75% glycoHde and 25% caprolactone. The molecular weight and the percentages of glycoHde and caprolactone are not the same as the coating polymer on Dexon II, but the stmcture (3) is as shown for that polymer. The suture is distributed under the trade name Monocryl. It is claimed to retain approximately 20 to 30% of its strength two weeks after implantation and to be absorbed ia 91 to 119 days. [Pg.268]

Various studies have been made on the effects of radiation on lactide/glycolide polymers (24,38,58). Gilding and Reed (24) reported the effect of y rays on Dexon sutures. Those results confirmed that deterioration of the sutures occurs but that random chain scission is not the primary mechanism. Number average-molecular weight Mn showed a dramatic decrease at doses above 1.0 Mrad. Thus, unzipping of the polymer chain appeared to be the more dominant process, at least in the case of polyglycolide. [Pg.13]

This field has been well reviewed by B. J. Tighe.(82) The polymers, for the most part, are polyesters. Poly(glycolic acid) (83) is widely used in sutures under the trade name of DEXON. Poly(lactic acid) is also used.(84) A copolymer of 92/8 mole percent poly(glycolic acid)/poly(lactic acid) (85,86) is another alternative. [Pg.9]

Polyglycolic acid is a homopolymer of glycolide and was the initial synthetic suture offered for sale under the trade name of Dexon. It is formed into monofilaments from the melt with the filaments stretched as they are formed to assist in aligning the polymer chain, thus increasing the filament strength. Polyglycolic acid (structure 19.33) is also braided into sutures. [Pg.605]
