The Devils

C21-0090. The first commercially successful method for the production of aluminum metal was developed in 1854 by H. Deville. The process relied on earlier work by the Danish scientist H. Oersted, who discovered that aluminum chloride is produced when chlorine gas is passed over hot aluminum oxide. Deville found that aluminum chloride reacts with sodium metal to give aluminum metal. Write balanced equations for these two reactions.

The Flemish painter David Ryckaert s portrait of an alchemist (Figure i6) combines the untidy desk littered with vanitas symbols, the vase (here containing not urine, but the coming-to-form of a homunculus), and the wife. Like Madame de Lavoisier, the wife peers over the shoulder of her seated husband. In Ryckaert s work, the alchemist wears an expression of horror. The glass contains a little man, or perhaps the devil. The wife raises her hand in dismay. Meanwhile, in the corner, a child blows a pig s bladder, a common symbol of futility.

Beilstein and Kuhlberg prepared two dinitrotol-uenes, but give the melting-point of but one of the two. This was the same as that of Deville. The work of Beilstein and Kuhlberg seems to have been mostly on the mononitro-compounds of toluene, and the acidic and basic compounds of mononitrotoluene.

Sainte-Claire Deville the eudothermic decompositions which are produced by the passage of a long series of sparks within a gas are due to the high temperature produced by the spark they are likewise confirmations of the principle of the displacement of equilibrium by variation of temperature. 

Nickel is the only element named after the devil. The name comes ftom the German word Kupfemickel, meaning Old Nick s copper, a term used by German miners. They tried to remove copper ftom an ore that looked like copper ore, but they were unsuccessful. Instead of copper, they got slag, a useless mass of earthy material. The miners believed the devU ( Old Nick ) was playing a trick on them. So they called the fake copper ore Old Nick s copper.

Bunsen s electrolytic researches included the electrodeposition of chromium from chromous chloride solution, in which the great influence of the current density was observed with amalgamated platinum wire cathodes even metallic barium and calcium were deposited from hot concentrated solutions of the chlorides. He described (after Deville) the electrolytic production of aluminium from fused NaAlCl4. Bunsen and Matthiessen described the preparation of lithium by electrolysis of the fused chloride.
