Advances were made in developing dyeing methods and auxiliary products (sections 5.8.3 and 12.2) to improve the level-dyeing and coverage properties of sulphonated 1 2 metal-complex dyes, leading to the widespread adoption of the more economical of the monosulphonates in uses where unsulphonated dyes were previously considered essential. At present, synthetic routes to more than 40 metal complexes other than the copper complex are known. Apart from a cobalt phthalocyanine pigment (P.B.75) which was introduced to the market just recently, none of the resulting products, however, has stimulated commercial interest as a pigment. Nickel complexes, however, are found in reactive dyes, while cobalt complexes of this basic structure are employed as developing dyes.

On cellulose acetate, developing dyes are still used, but for black only. Although dyeings are produced that are especially fast to wet treatments, the process is more tedious than dyeing with direct disperse dyes. 

In the past, this method was used to dye, e.g., cambric and bunting. Today, easier methods using developing dyes and vat dyes have replaced this process. 

In the afterchroming method with chrome-developing dyes, the dyeing liquor is prepared with formic acid (pH 3.5-3.8), sodium sulfate, and an amphoteric leveling agent as a wool protectant. The 1,6- and 1,7-naphthylaminesulfonic acids have long been very important as components for azo dyes, particularly as the middle component in polyazo dyes. They are used in the preparation of the important black cotton dyes of the type of Columbia black FF, and also of a whole series of developed dyes, such as the important naphthogene blue, Zambesi black V, and others. Sulfonic acids of this type are also frequently used in preparing dyes of the Sirius blue series (Bayer).

Developed dyes n. Dyes that are formed by the use of a developer. The substrate is first dyed in a neutral solution with a dye base, usually colorless. The dye is then diazotized with sodium nitrate and an acid and afterwards treated with a solution of jS-naph-thol, or a similar substance, which is the developer. Direct dyes are developed to produce a different shade or to improve washfastness or lightfastness.
