Canned and Semimoist Foods. Canned and dry foods are nutritionally comparable on a moisture-free basis. Some canned foods are basically dry foods to which gravy, moisture, and flavor enhancers have been added. Almost all animals tend to prefer moist foods to dry, and canned foods are desirable for geriatric dogs and cats, particularly those having gum and dental deterioration. Canned foods can be gulped by dogs and consumed quickly by cats. [Pg.149]

Deterioration. The causes of degradation phenomena in textiles (155—158, 164) are many and include pollution, bleaches, acids, alkaUes, and, of course, wear. The single most important effect, however, is that of photodegradation. Both ceUulosic and proteinaceous fibers are highly photosensitive. The natural sensitivity of the fibers are enhanced by impurities, remainders of finishing processes, and mordants for dyes. Depolymerization and oxidation lead to decreased fiber strength and to embrittlement. [Pg.428]

Other Specialty Chemicals. In fuel-ceU technology, nickel oxide cathodes have been demonstrated for the conversion of synthesis gas and the generation of electricity (199) (see Fuel cells). Nickel salts have been proposed as additions to water-flood tertiary cmde-oil recovery systems (see Petroleum, ENHANCED oil recovery). The salt forms nickel sulfide, which is an oxidation catalyst for H2S, and provides corrosion protection for downweU equipment. Sulfur-containing nickel complexes have been used to limit the oxidative deterioration of solvent-refined mineral oils (200). [Pg.15]

An important consideration is the effect of filler and its degree of interaction with the polymer matrix. Under strain, a weak bond at the binder-filler interface often leads to dewetting of the binder from the solid particles to formation of voids and deterioration of mechanical properties. The primary objective is, therefore, to enhance the particle-matrix interaction or increase debond fracture energy. A most desirable property is a narrow gap between the maximum (e ) and ultimate elongation ch) on the stress-strain curve. The ratio, e , eh, may be considered as the interface efficiency, a ratio of unity implying perfect efficiency at the interfacial Junction. [Pg.715]

From these results, it was believed that the decrease of the V2O5 reoxidation property, caused by the increase of the reducing power, leaded to the deterioration of the activity of V2O5 catalyst in the selective oxidation of H2S under the environment of coal-derived synthesis gas. And the decreased reoxidation property of the V2O5 was enhanced by increasing oxygen and/or water content. [Pg.427]

The last problem of this series concerns femtosecond laser ablation from gold nanoparticles [87]. In this process, solid material transforms into a volatile phase initiated by rapid deposition of energy. This ablation is nonthermal in nature. Material ejection is induced by the enhancement of the electric field close to the curved nanoparticle surface. This ablation is achievable for laser excitation powers far below the onset of general catastrophic material deterioration, such as plasma formation or laser-induced explosive boiling. Anisotropy in the ablation pattern was observed. It coincides with a reduction of the surface barrier from water vaporization and particle melting. This effect limits any high-power manipulation of nanostructured surfaces such as surface-enhanced Raman measurements or plasmonics with femtosecond pulses. [Pg.282]

It is likely that initial deterioration of the antiviral immune response, combined with increased viral replication at later stages of infection, allows for the selection and propagation of X4 viruses, which in turn will lead to the accelerated decay of immune system function. Recent studies have in fact shown that the majority of patients that presented with AIDS were noted to harbor only R5 viral strains, and interestingly disease progression was associated with an enhanced ability of these R5 viruses to utilize low levels of CD4 and CCR5,... [Pg.264]

Aromatics, olefins and in general, unsaturated compounds undergo hydrogenation reactions, usually unwanted due to their detrimental effect on the operating costs, derived from an excessive consumption of hydrogen. Aromatic saturation, however, is used in jet fuel to improve the smoke point and in diesel for cetane enhancement. In the case of gasoline, extreme hydrogenation leads to a deterioration of the fuel performance parameters. [Pg.15]
