Design Metabolic Pathway Engineering

Modern cell factory engineering allows for the design of new metabolic pathways, expansion of the product portfolio, utilization of new substrates, and engineering of complex cellular features for high productivity and robustness (Figure 18.1). This chapter focuses on recent developments in the application of yeasts in biotechnology. Besides flavonoids and other natural products, other unnatural compounds with significant titer are alternatively synthesized from glucose in E. coli through de novo design and development of novel metabolic pathway petrochemicals [62]. Thus, metabolic engineering and use of E. coli as a microbial factory has extensively attracted interest in the development of a novel system for modification and efficient production of highly useful compounds.
