As of 1994, there were approximately 47 progestin-containing contraceptive dmg formulations sold in the United States for use as oral contraceptives (Table 3). In addition, there are three nonoral contraceptive formulations containing progestins ie, one injectable (Depo-Provera), one as an intrauterine device (lUD) (Progestasert), and one implantable (Norplant). Of the oral formulations, all but two also contain an estrogen component, ethynylestradiol. [Pg.223]

Drug-drug interactions are often more problematic with carbamazepine than other mood stabilizers. Carbamazepine increases the activity of certain liver enzymes. Because these enzymes metabolize and eliminate medications and other substances introduced to the body, carbamazepine therapy can decrease the blood level and thereby reduce the effectiveness of itself (a phenomenon called autoinduction) and other medications that are metabolized by these enzymes. It is not unusual to find that the dose of carbamazepine must be increased after several weeks, because it has increased its own elimination. Other medications may likewise be less effective. Of particular concern are the oral contraceptives, Depo-Provera, and protease inhibitors used for the treatment of HI V+ patients. Oral contraceptives often require an increase in dose. [Pg.84]

In 1992, the US FDA approved a long-acting contraceptive device containing synthetic progestin medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) hormones. Manufactured by Pfizer, Inc., it is sold under the trade name Depo-Provera . It is typically injected into a woman s buttocks or upper arm, and renders her temporarily sterile for up to 3 months. ... [Pg.22]

Medroxyprogesterone acetate and its metabolites are excreted in breast milk, so women who breastfeed should wait until 6 weeks post partum before starting Depo-Provera, when the infant s enzyme system should be more mature. Norethisterone enantate 200 mg (Noristerat) is shorter acting than Depo-Provera, 8 weeks, and is used to provide contraception after administration of the rubella vaccine, and until a partner s vasectomy has taken effect. It can also be used in the longer-term but only on a named patient basis. [Pg.727]

A useful alternative to the pill especially in women in whom estrogen is contraindicated, is Depo-Provera (medroxyptogesterone acetate) which when given i.m. every 3 months is an effective contraceptive. This progestin in large continuous doses Induced an increased incidence of mammary cancer in beagle dogs, an effect not reported in other animals or... [Pg.169]

Another type of contraception is injectable progestin, a synthetic form of progesterone. Depo-Provera is a product that is injected by a healthcare professional into the arm muscle or buttocks every 3 months. [Pg.144]

Depo-Provera is a contraceptive injection required four times a year to maintain its effectiveness. [Pg.144]
