As described at the end of section Al.6.1. in nonlinear spectroscopy a polarization is created in the material which depends in a nonlinear way on the strength of the electric field. As we shall now see, the microscopic description of this nonlinear polarization involves multiple interactions of the material with the electric field. The multiple interactions in principle contain infomiation on both the ground electronic state and excited electronic state dynamics, and for a molecule in the presence of solvent, infomiation on the molecule-solvent interactions. Excellent general introductions to nonlinear spectroscopy may be found in [35, 36 and 37]. Raman spectroscopy, described at the end of the previous section, is also a nonlinear spectroscopy, in the sense that it involves more than one interaction of light with the material, but it is a pathological example since the second interaction is tlirough spontaneous emission and therefore not proportional to a driving field... 

The biological response to chemical insult may take numerous forms, depending on the physicochemical properties of the material and the conditions of exposure. Listed below are some of the more significant and frequendy encountered types of injury or toxic response they may be defined in terms of tissue pathology, altered or aberrant biochemical processes, or extreme physiological responses. 

Later, in the 1890s, Arrhenius moved to quite different concerns, but it is intriguing that materials scientists today do not think of him in terms of the concept of ions (which are so familiar that few are concerned about who first thought up the concept), but rather venerate him for the Arrhenius equation for the rate of a chemical reaction (Arrhenius 1889), with its universally familiar exponential temperature dependence. That equation was in fact first proposed by van t HofT, but Arrhenius claimed that van t Hoff s derivation was not watertight and so it is now called after Arrhenius rather than van t Hoff" (who was in any case an almost pathologically modest and retiring man). 

Thrombosis is an imbalance toward the clotting capacity of the blood that leads to vessel occlusion by a clot. The clot prohibits ftuther blood flow and can so cause pathological sequelae dependent on its localization. 

Drug addiction is a pathological behavioral syndrome that has to be strictly separated from physical dependence. An individual can be physically dependent on a drug without being addicted to it and vice versa. Transient neuroadaptive processes underlie physical dependence and tolerance to a drug, whereas persistent changes within specific neuronal systems underlie addictive behavior. 

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is characterized by abnormal left ventricular thickening. The left ventricular septum is the most common site of involvement. Pathologically, the disease is characterized by myocardial fiber disarray. The myocardium may exhibit extensive scarring and disorganization of interstitial and intercellular tissue (Elstein et al., 1992).
