Dependence on oxidation state

As may be seen from the available data for the second transition series binary fluorides illustrated in Figure 5, the approximate lack of dependence of the M-F bond character (whether bridging or nonbridging) on the oxidation state of M appears to hold for the fluorides of Nb and Mo as well as those of Ru and Rh. As better precision is attained, for the structures of the pentafluo-rides of Nb and Mo, it is highly probable that this approximate constancy of M-F bond character will be affirmed. There are, however, some subtle dependencies on oxidation state which deserve comment. 

Electron donors or acceptors (oxidation-reduction) Oxidation and redudion reactions are important in weathering because they affect the solubility and the mobility of a number of elements. The solubilities of Fe, Mn, N, and S are strongly dependent on oxidation state. The transfer of electrons is often mediated by microorganisms. 

The photo-electron spectra of uranium and its compounds (10,45) are entirely different from the lanthanides in several aspects, in particular in the moderate chemical shifts less dependent on oxidation state than on the ligating atoms. Several pyrroles, indoles, and carbazoles have found use both as laser dyes and textile dyes. For example, a number of pyrromethene-BFa complexes such as (176) show broadband laser activity in the region 530-580 nm under flashlamp excitation <90HAC389>. Indoloanthraquinone (177) is an efficient laser dye in the 500-550 nm region <91BCJ3417>. The composition of individual phases in the near-surface region is normally obtained by EDS or by the more accurate WDS while surface composition can be determined by XPS or SAM. Examples of the latter will be discussed later in this section. Other techniques, gaining in importance, which can be applied to compositional phase analysis are EXAFS and NEXAFS.
