Denuders

This amalgam then reacts separately with H2O in denuders or decomposers to produce and NaOH. [Pg.482]

The catholyte from diaphragm cells typically analyzes as 9—12% NaOH and 14—16% NaCl. This ceUHquor is concentrated to 50% NaOH in a series of steps primarily involving three or four evaporators. Membrane cells, on the other hand, produce 30—35% NaOH which is evaporated in a single stage to produce 50% NaOH. Seventy percent caustic containing very Httie salt is made directiy in mercury cell production by reaction of the sodium amalgam from the electrolytic cells with water in denuders. [Pg.482]

Their contribution to the total dissolved load in rivers can be estimated by considering the mean composition of river water and the relative importance of various rocks to weathering. Estimates (18) indicate that evaporites and carbonates contribute approximately 17% and 38%, respectively, of the total dissolved load in the wodd s rivers. The remaining 45% is the result of the weathering of siUcates, underlining the significant role of these minerals in the overall chemical denudation of the earth s surface. [Pg.214]

Mercury denuded of sodium is pumped back into the cell for continuous recirculation. [Pg.76]

The left-hand side of Eq. (14-55) represents the efficiency of absorption of arw one component of the feed-gas mixture. If the solvent oil is denuded of solute so that Xo = 0, the left-hand side is equal to the fractional absorption of the component from the rich feed gas. When the number of theoretical plates N and the hquid and gas rates L i and G, f have been fixed, the uractional absorption of each component may be computed directly and the operating lines need not be placed by trial and error as in the graphic approach described earlier. [Pg.1362]

The two types of hot eorrosion eause different types of attaek. High-temperature eorrosion features intergranular attaek, sulfide partieles and a denuded zone of base metal. Metal oxidation oeeurs when oxygen atoms eombine with metal atoms to form oxide seales. The higher the temperature, the more rapidly this proeess takes plaee, ereating the potential for failure of the eomponent if too mueh of the substrate material is eon-sumed in the formation of these oxides. [Pg.420]

Low-temperature eorrosion eharaeteristieally shows no denuded zone, no intergranular attaek, and a layered type of eorrosion seale. [Pg.420]

The adsorbers are usually built of steel, and may be lagged or left unlagged the horizontal type is shown in Figure 28. The vapor-laden air is fed by the blower into one adsorber which contains a bed of 6- to 8-mesh activated carbon granules 12 to 30 inches thick. The air velocity through the bed is 40 to 90 feet per minute. The carbon particles retain the vapor only the denuded air reaches the exit, and then the exhaust line. The adsorption is allowed to continue until the carbon is saturated, when the vapor-laden air is diverted to the second adsorber, while the first adsorber receives low-pressure steam fed in below the carbon bed. The vapor is reformed and carried out by the steam. The two are condensed and if the solvent is not miscible with water, it may be decanted continuously while the water is run off similarly. After a period which may be approximately 30 or 60 minutes, all the vapor has been removed, the adsorbing power of the charcoal has been restored, and the adsorber is ready to function again, while adsorber No. 2 is steamed in turn. [Pg.300]

Many operations in petrochemical plants require the absorption of components from gas streams into lean oils or solvents. The resultant rich oil is then stripped or denuded of the absorbed materials. The greatest use of this operation utilizes hydrocarbon materials, but the basic principles are applicable to other systems provided adequate equilibrium data are available. [Pg.108]

For a complete denuded inlet solvent at the top 2X = 0, using K at top column conditions. The slope of the operating line = Lq/Vx + j = mols lean oil entering/mols wet gas entering. [Pg.109]

Formation of the first layer (a monolayer) of passivating oxide film on a denuded metal surface occurs very simply by the loss of protons from the adsorbed intermediate oxidation products, such intermediates being common to both dissolution and passivation processes . Thus for example, the first oxidative step in the anodic oxidation of nickel is the formation of the unstable adsorbed intermediate NiOH by... [Pg.127]

Intergranular corrosion is encountered in many metal systems, often associated with the presence of precipitates at grain boundaries. In the case of stainless steels, one widely accepted theory states that the precipitation of chromium carbides leads to a chromium-denuded zone which undergoes rapid corrosion. [Pg.1118]

Airway hyperresponsiveness is an exaggerated airway narrowing in response to a variety of unspecific stimuli. It can be measured by bronchial provocation with histamine, methacholine or adenosine. The reason for hyperresponsiveness may be stimulation of sensory nerves that are located within the epithelium. They become easily accessible after denudation of the... [Pg.286]

Topical corticosteroids vary in potency, depending on tiie concentration of the drug (percentage), the vehicle in which the drug is suspended (lotion, cream, aerosol spray), and the area to which the drug is applied (open or denuded skin, unbroken skin, thickness of the skin over tiie treated area). [Pg.610]

Rivers transport suspended sediments derived from the disintegration of basin surface layers. With reduced velocity, sediment is deposited in the river channel. The finest material is carried to the sea. It has been estimated that the average mechanical denudation rate for continents is 0.056 mm year (35). This is based on a total suspended load of 13.5 x 10 metric tons year (S). Presently, about two-thirds of the world s total suspended sediment load derives from Southern Asia and large Pacific Islands. Berner has estimated the increase in sediment loss in the U.S. and world since prehuman times to be approximately 200% (35). Current estimated erosion rate from the major land forms is provided in Table I. The relatively recent construction of large sediment trapping dams that normally caused sediment to be deposited in river valleys or transported to the ocean has drastically reduced sediment yields in great rivers. [Pg.251]

This chapter examines climatic and tectonic controls on erosion in the tropics and the implications of these observations regarding the composition of erosion products in general. The role of glaciations in continental denudation will then be examined and contrasted with tropical conditions. Finally, we will briefly examine human effects. [Pg.196]

Soil water flow is decidedly episodic. During dry times the water solutions in the soil are probably fairly concentrated and not very reactive. Time-averaged reaction rates should be roughly proportional to the fraction of time reacting minerals are in contact with thermodynamically imdersaturated (and reactive) water. In a study of the relationship between denudation rate and runoff for rivers draining igneous and metamorphic rock in Kenya, Dunne (1978) obtains the relationship of (denudation rate in tons/km per year) = 0.28 (runoff in mm/ year)°. ... [Pg.201]

Paolini, 1986 Stallard, 1980). Comparison with Fig. 9-7 shows a reasonable match between denudation rates and uplift rates for a particular type of terrain. The most concentrated water samples and highest denudation rates are observed in river basins in tectonically active areas. [Pg.212]
