Density functional theory, wave function

To use direct dynamics for the study of non-adiabatic systems it is necessary to be able to efficiently and accurately calculate electronic wave functions for excited states. In recent years, density functional theory (DFT) has been gaining ground over traditional Hartree-Fock based SCF calculations for the treatment of the ground state of large molecules. Recent advances mean that so-called time-dependent DFT methods are now also being applied to excited states. Even so, at present, the best general methods for the treatment of the photochemistry of polyatomic organic molecules are MCSCF methods, of which the CASSCF method is particularly powerful. 

A basis set is a set of functions used to describe the shape of the orbitals in an atom. Molecular orbitals and entire wave functions are created by taking linear combinations of basis functions and angular functions. Most semiempirical methods use a predehned basis set. When ah initio or density functional theory calculations are done, a basis set must be specihed. Although it is possible to create a basis set from scratch, most calculations are done using existing basis sets. The type of calculation performed and basis set chosen are the two biggest factors in determining the accuracy of results. This chapter discusses these standard basis sets and how to choose an appropriate one. 

It is important to realize that whenever qualitative or frontier molecular orbital theory is invoked, the description is within the orbital (Hartree-Fock or Density Functional) model for the electronic wave function. In other words, rationalizing a trend in computational results by qualitative MO theory is only valid if the effect is present at the HF or DFT level. If the majority of the variation is due to electron correlation, an explanation in terms of interacting orbitals is not appropriate. 

The pseudopotential density-functional technique is used to calculate total energies, forces on atoms and stress tensors as described in Ref. 13 and implemented in the computer code CASTEP. CASTEP uses a plane-wave basis set to expand wave-functions and a preconditioned conjugate gradient scheme to solve the density-functional theory (DFT) equations iteratively. Brillouin zone integration is carried out via the special points scheme by Monkhorst and Pack. The nonlocal pseudopotentials in Kleynman-Bylander form were optimized in order to achieve the best convergence with respect to the basis set size. 5... 

A currently popular alternative to the ah initio method is density functional theory, in which the energy is expressed in terms of the electron density rather than the wave-function itself. The advantage of this approach is that it is less demanding computationally, requires less computer time, and in some cases—particularly for d-metal complexes—gives better agreement with experimental values than other procedures. 

In the Hartree-Fock approach, the many-body wave function in form of a Slater determinant plays the key role in the theory. For instance, the Hartree-Fock equations are derived by minimization of the total energy expressed in terms of this determinantal wave function. In density functional theory (3,4), the fundamental role is taken over by an observable quantity, the electron density. An important theorem of density functional theory states that the correct ground state density, n(r), determines rigorously all electronic properties of the system, in particular its total energy. The totd energy of a system can be expressed as a functional of the density n (r) and this functional, E[n (r)], is minimized by the ground state density. 

It is also of interest to study the "inverse" problem. If something is known about the symmetry properties of the density or the (first order) density matrix, what can be said about the symmetry properties of the corresponding wave functions In a one electron problem the effective Hamiltonian is constructed either from the density [in density functional theories] or from the full first order density matrix [in Hartree-Fock type theories]. If the density or density matrix is invariant under all the operations of a space CToup, the effective one electron Hamiltonian commutes with all those elements. Consequently the eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian transform under these operations according to the irreducible representations of the space group. We have a scheme which is selfconsistent with respect to symmetty.

It is a truism that in the past decade density functional theory has made its way from a peripheral position in quantum chemistry to center stage. Of course the often excellent accuracy of the DFT based methods has provided the primary driving force of this development. When one adds to this the computational economy of the calculations, the choice for DFT appears natural and practical. So DFT has conquered the rational minds of the quantum chemists and computational chemists, but has it also won their hearts To many, the success of DFT appeared somewhat miraculous, and maybe even unjust and unjustified. Unjust in view of the easy achievement of accuracy that was so hard to come by in the wave function based methods. And unjustified it appeared to those who doubted the soundness of the theoretical foundations. There has been misunderstanding concerning the status of the one-determinantal approach of Kohn and Sham, which superficially appeared to preclude the incorporation of correlation effects. There has been uneasiness about the molecular orbitals of the Kohn-Sham model, which chemists used qualitatively as they always have used orbitals but which in the physics literature were sometimes denoted as mathematical constructs devoid of physical (let alone chemical) meaning. 

Since the Fock operator is a effective one-electron operator, equation (1-29) describes a system of N electrons which do not interact among themselves but experience an effective potential VHF. In other words, the Slater determinant is the exact wave function of N noninteracting particles moving in the field of the effective potential VHF.5 It will not take long before we will meet again the idea of non-interacting systems in the discussion of the Kohn-Sham approach to density functional theory. 

In this section we will approach the question which is at the very heart of density functional theory can we possibly replace the complicated N-electron wave function with its dependence on 3N spatial plus N spin variables by a simpler quantity, such as the electron density After using plausibility arguments to demonstrate that this seems to be a sensible thing to do, we introduce two early realizations of this idea, the Thomas-Fermi model and Slater s approximation of Hartree-Fock exchange defining the X(/ method. The discussion in this chapter will prepare us for the next steps, where we will encounter physically sound reasons why the density is really all we need. 

Let us introduce another early example by Slater, 1951, where the electron density is exploited as the central quantity. This approach was originally constructed not with density functional theory in mind, but as an approximation to the non-local and complicated exchange contribution of the Hartree-Fock scheme. We have seen in the previous chapter that the exchange contribution stemming from the antisymmetry of the wave function can be expressed as the interaction between the charge density of spin o and the Fermi hole of the same spin... 

In order to connect this variational principle to density functional theory we perform the search defined in equation (4-13) in two separate steps first, we search over the subset of all the infinitely many antisymmetric wave functions Px that upon quadrature yield a particular density px (under the constraint that the density integrates to the correct number of electrons). The result of this search is the wave function vFxin that yields the lowest...
