LaClair (43) has employed the dehydrohalogenation reaction to determine the gamma isomer of benzene hexachloride in the technical product and in dust mixtures. Two identical samples are dissolved in 95% ethyl alcohol and treated with 1 N ethanolic potassium hydroxide at 0° C. for 15 and 50 minutes, respectively. The 15-minute period is sufficient to dehydrochlorinate most of the alpha and the delta isomers without appreciably affecting the gamma. In 50 minutes the gamma isomer is also dehydrochlorinated. The beta isomer does not react under these conditions, and usually the epsilon isomer is present in quantities too small to interfere seriously. [Pg.67]

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main active ingredient in marijuana, reduces the amount of time spent in REM sleep, although tolerance to this effect can develop over time and the overall amount of time spent in REM sleep returns to normal levels. However, like people who constantly drink alcohol or take narcotic pain relievers, people who smoke marijuana daily can experience REM rebound after stopping the drug. [Pg.90]

Performance on the Delta system has been demonstrated to be sensitive to the effects of alcohol, amphetamine, scopolamine, chemoradiotherapy, and hypoxia.63-66 The Delta test system has been used in a number of applied settings, including airplane and tank operator training sites.61,62... [Pg.120]

Cadmium in the body is known to affect several enzymes. It is believed that the renal damage that results in proteinuria is the result of cadmium adversely affecting enzymes responsible for reabsorption of proteins in kidney tubules. Cadmium also reduces the activity of delta-aminolevulinic acid synthetase (Figure 10.3), arylsulfatase, alcohol dehydrogenase, and lipoamide dehydrogenase, whereas it enhances the activity of delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase, pyruvate dehydrogenase, and pyruvate decarboxylase. [Pg.234]

Delta receptor knockout mice were exposed to alcohol, and drinking was examined in the two-bottle choice and operant self-administration paradigms [73,80]. First, naive animals consumed alcohol as wild-type animals in the two-bottle choice. After training to self-administer alcohol, the mutant mice developed a stronger preference for alcohol and consumed more than wild-type mice in both tests. After alcohol experience also, their anxiety decreased and reversed to wild-type levels. This suggests that, in the case of alcohol, delta receptor activity may partly influence addictive behavior indirectly, by modulating anxiety-like responses. Whether this applies to selfconsumption of other drugs of abuse remains to be determined. [Pg.55]

The potential utility of delta antagonists for the treatment of alcohol abuse has excited considerable interest over the last decade for at least two reasons. First, numerous studies suggest that the abuse-related effects of alcohol are mediated, at least in part, by endogenous opioid systems [114]. Second, the relatively nonselective opioid antagonist naltrexone has acknowledged clin-... [Pg.417]

Glucono Delta-Lactone occurs as a fine, white, crystalline powder. It is freely soluble in water and is sparingly soluble in alcohol. It decomposes at about 153°. [Pg.194]

Answer In one isomer, there is the possibility of delta-hydrogen abstraction by an alkoxyl radical, forming a furan ring in the other, the alcohol group is too far away from the delta hydrogen for this to happen. [Pg.140]
