Hoffman Degradation. Polyacrylamide reacts with alkaline sodium hypochlorite [7681-52-9], NaOCl, or calcium hypochlorite [7778-54-3], Ca(OCl)2, to form a polymer with primary amine groups (58). Optimum conditions for the reaction include a slight molar excess of sodium hypochlorite, a large excess of sodium hydroxide, and low temperature (59). Cross-linking sometimes occurs if the polymer concentration is high. High temperatures can result in chain scission. [Pg.141]

Radiation Effects. Polytetrafluoroethylene is attacked by radiation. In the absence of oxygen, stable secondary radicals are produced. An increase in stiffness in material irradiated in vacuum indicates cross-linking (84). Degradation is due to random scission of the chain the relative stabiUty of the radicals in vacuum protects the materials from rapid deterioration. Reactions take place in air or oxygen and accelerated scission and rapid degradation occur. [Pg.352]

This highly soluble polymer is found in the extracts of many fmits and seeds, in the boiling water extracts of pine wood (127), in the extracts of marshmallow roots (A/t/jaea officina/is) (128), and aspen (63) and willow (Sa/ix a/ba F) (129) bark. Because arabinan can be isolated from mildly degraded pectin fractions, it is often difficult to determine whether it is a hemiceUulose or a labile fragment of a larger polysaccharide and/or lignin complex. Arabinans have a complex stmcture composed almost entirely of 5-linked a-L-arabinofuranosyl units with similar residues linked to them at C-2 and/or C-3 and is soluble in 70% aqueous methanol solution. [Pg.32]

Because high temperatures are required to decompose diaLkyl peroxides at useful rates, P-scission of the resulting alkoxy radicals is more rapid and more extensive than for most other peroxide types. The thermal stability of polymers of types (1) and (2) is also dependent on the nature of the substituents on phosphoms. Polymers with methoxy and ethoxy substituents undergo skeletal changes and degradation above about 100°C, but aryloxy and fluoroalkoxy substituents provide higher thermal stability (4). Secondary bonds are considerably weaker than the primary covalent bonds. When a linear or branched polymer is heated, the dissociation energies of the secondary bonds are exceeded long before the primary covalent bonds are broken, freeing up the individual chains to flow under stress. When the material is cooled, the secondary bonds reform. Thus, linear and branched polymers are generally thermoplastic. On the other hand, cross-links contain primary covalent bonds like those that bond the atoms in the main chains. When a cross-linked polymer is heated sufficiently, these primary covalent bonds fail randomly, and the material degrades. Therefore, cross-linked polymers are thermosets. There are a few exceptions such as cellulose and polyacrylonitrile. Though linear, these polymers are not thermoplastic because the extensive secondary bonds make up for in quantity what they lack in quahty. [Pg.432]

Some cleavage takes place even if the phenoHc hydroxyl is blocked as an ether link to another phenylpropane unit and quinonemethide formation is prevented. If the a- or y-carbon hydroxyl is free, alkaH-catalyzed neighboring-group attack can take place with epoxide formation and P-aryloxide elimination.
