Deal breakers

A controversial issue is the ownership of IP arising from the cooperation between customer and supplier. The customer holds the position that all IPRs resulting from a joint project belong to him. His arguments are that (1) without his input there would have been no invention anyhow and (2) that he has paid for the development of the IP, either directly by funding the supplier s R D work or indirectly through the price that he pays for the product. The supplier maintains that IP is an essential prerequisite for her business. If she cannot advance her know-how, she will drop out of business sooner or later. Also, the customer would not have entrusted her with a project, if he had not been attracted by the supplier s know-how. These opposite views are a critical element in contract negotiations and can become a deal breaker. 

Finally, one usually undertakes a TOA with the idea of moving ahead somehow, but data is data, and the assessment may reveal any number of deal breakers ... 

Review the chart you made in Chapter 3 (see Exhibit 3-3) that lists the ten factors that must be satisfied before you will accept a job—just to make sure that you haven t overlooked anything. Is there anything the job is not offering you that you wish it had And of the things you re not going to get, are any of them deal breakers ... 

Utility CEOs would be well advised to concentrate on those "deal breakers" that might prevent the successful formation of the JNOC — and to stay personally involved in the details until analysis shows the JNOC to be a good (or bad) idea for that utility. Information Costs. Again, the IT infrastructure required for online sales increases costs. In the case of an online grocer, this is somewhat more significant than with the other online channels, because an online grocer takes on a wider range of functions that shoppers do themselves. Therefore, IT costs are higher for an online grocer. As in the other examples, however, IT costs are not a deal breaker for this business model. 

The two comparatively new type of breakers, vacuum and SFg are exceptions and have gained favour in view of their reliability and durability. For details on these breakers, see Sections 19.5.5 and 19.5.6, which also deal with their switching behaviour and phenomenon of arc reignition. Figures 12.44 and 12.45 illustrate typical power and control circuit diagrams respectively, for a 6.6 kV breaker-operated motor starter. 

It is for the user to choose the most appropriate circuit breaker to suit requirements, application and cost. Here we discuss briefly the philosophy of circuit interruption and the effect of insulating and quenching mediums on the arc extinction of these breakers. We also deal briefly with the constructional features and application of such breakers. For more details one may refer to the manufacturers catalogues and literature available on the subject.

Mechanical foam breakers and chemical methods are employed to destroy unwanted foams. The strategy is similar to that discussed previously for dealing with emulsions. The stabilising monomolecular surfactant must be sufficiently displaced to create a hole in the liquid layer. Antifoams are typically low-solubility surfactants.

However, the lack of breaker coordination can present more of a challenge to plant personnel tiying to deal with a plant transient. It is desirable to have as much safety related equipment as possible available to plant operators to afford them more flexibility in reacting to any particular abnormal situation. With proper breaker coordination, only the faulted component is lost without affecting other components that may be fed from the same electrical bus.
