DDT and metabolites

In other publications the historical trend of organic pollutant concentrations, namely polychlorinated biphenys (PCBs), chlorinated pesticides DDT and metabolites DDE, DDD, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), have been reconstructed. Amberlite XAD-2 resin is a suitable adsorbent for polychlorinated biphenyl and chlorinated insecticides (DDT and metabolites, dieldrin) in seawater. These compounds can be suitably eluted from the resin prior to gas chromatography [356,358].

Australian health authorities and researchers have conducted a number of studies into organochlorine insecticide residues and human milk that span three decades of organochlorine use, from 1969 to the early 1990s. Early Australian studies of human milk contamination (e.g. HCB, DDT and metabolites, HCH isomers and cyclodienes) cover the period from 1969 to 1972 and include Western Australia (Stacey Thomas, 1975), New South Wales (Siyali, 1973), Victoria (Monheit Luke, 1990) and Queensland (Miller Fox, 1973). Total DDT was shown to occur in the parts per billion range (pg kg-1) in whole milk and in the parts per million range (mg kg-1) in milk fats.

Study on the occurrence and levels of pesticides residues in the river Danube has established the presence of organochlorine pesticides (HCH isomers, HCB and DDT), atrazine and desethylatrazine. Simazine and chlorinated phenols (2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and pentachlorophenol) were also detected (Bratanova Z. et al., 1998). Relatively high levels of DDT and metabolites in the water samples after incidents with pesticide stocks are reported (Kambourova et al., 2005). Atrazine and lindane also were found (Bratanova Z. et al., 2000).

Any of the common laboratory solvents can be used in the extractor, but the final choice will depend on the analytes that are to be extracted. Fritzpatrick and Dean described a method for selecting the optimum solvent for the extraction of DDT (and metabolites) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) from soil when using ASE they broke the Hildebrand solubility parameter down into three components, to optimally select methylene chloride for DDT and a mixmre of methylene chloride and acetonitrile for PCP (61).
