The case was watched closely by authorities, and in response to public outcry over Samantha Reid s death, Congress banned the substance in April 2000. At the same time, President Clinton signed the Hillary J. Farias and Samantha Reid Date Rape Drug Prohibition Act into law. Apart from alcohol s incapacitating effects, which impair motor functions and make it more difficult for a victim to resist unwanted advances, alcohol facilitates date rape in less obvious ways. For instance, attackers who ingest alcohol are more likely to misinterpret verbal and nonverbal cues from their victims.16 Similarly, alcohol also impairs a victim s ability to pick up cues and warning signs that might otherwise give some indication of a potentially dangerous situation.17 Additionally, when a victim consumes alcohol, it is much more likely that the rape will remain unreported. Many rape victims who themselves have consumed alcohol fear that the authorities will not believe that they were raped, or, worse, will place blame for what happened on the victim rather than the rapist. In the case of date rape, peers are more likely to blame the intoxicated victim for what occurred.18... [Pg.13]

Answer A. The signs and symptoms are characteristic of a CNS stimulant that facilitates the activity of amines in both the CNS and the periphery. Amphetamines promote the release of NE from sympathetic nerve endings, causing CV stimulation and pupillary dilation. In the CNS, they enhance the actions of DA, NE, and 5HT, causing behavioral excitation and a psychotic state that may be difficult to distinguish from schizophrenia. Ethanol, marijuana, fentanyl, and flunitrazepam (a benzodiazepine that has been used in date rape ) are all CNS depressants. [Pg.185]
