Damping designs

One special feature of the sensor parallel to damped design is that the sensor can be used with any damper system with a defined neutral position (Figure 5.46).

In the early design stages where a prototype is available, the optimum solution for data acquisition is to use experimental analysis on the prototype structure to refine an analytical model which can then be used for damping design(4). 

In the early stages of structural system design, complete operational temperature data may not be available. In such a case, data from similar systems should be reviewed and the best estimates of temperature should be developed and used in the damping design procedure. 

The remaining question to be answered before a damping design can be started is "How much damping is needed to eliminate the problem "... 

The other major area where accurate data are necessary is the dynamic characteristics of the system under consideration. The placement of a layered damping design on a portion of the structure which will not undergo major motion in a particular mode is as ineffective as placing a tuned damper on a node line of the mode you wish to control.

Please note that for the LWR-III we leave the inertia unshaped in order to preserve passivity of the controller. In turn, damping design becomes an important issue since the eigenfrequency is due to the Operational space mass matrix position dependent. Details can be found in [3].

Equivalent Lateral Force Procedure The simplest analysis procedure is the equivalent lateral force (ELF) procedure, which is analogous to the static design procedures for conventional structures. In this procedure, the 5 % damped design spectral acceleration for a site at a period of 1 s, Sjji, represents the design input.
