The 3-D Surface chart type in Excel s gallery of charts is not a true 3-D chart, but rather a Line chart in two dimensions. The X and Y axes are Categories — only the Z axis is proportional to the data plotted. Thus if you attempt to produce a 3-D chart using Excel, you ll have to take this limitation into account and work within it. The values on the X and Y axes must be equally spaced. Since only one Z axis value can be charted for any pair of X and Y Axis values, you can t produce a plot of a closed surface, such as a sphere. But this type of chart can be useful, for example, to show the effect of changing two variables on the yield of a process. [Pg.123]

A useful assumption about a curve in an image is that it arises from a space curve that is as planar as possible and as uniformly curved as possible. For 3-D representations, similar functional parameter values can be shown for a 3-D feature, such as surfaces, volumes and cut planes. To represent the magnitude of the functional parameter values, arrows can also be used to give a less scattered representation. Arrow plots are usually used to represent the flow directions and vortexes formed and they are particularly suitable for representing flow directions within the solution domain as these arrows can give clear directional information. [Pg.261]
