Cyclohexane, structural formula

Discovered in 1937 and patented in 1940, cyclamate is a derivative of cyclohexylamine, specifically, cyclohexane sulfonic acid. The sodium salt form is normally used, but the calcium salt may be substituted in low-sodium diets. See structural formulas below. 

Cyclohexane, used as a paint and varnish remover, has the formula C6H 2- In this molecule, each C atom is bonded to two H atoms and two other C atoms, and each H atom is bonded to one C atom. Write a structural formula for cyclohexane.

Draw a structural formula for cyclohexane, C6H12, in which the six carbon atoms are bonded in a ring and each has two hydrogen atoms bonded to it.

Another type of probe is exam-plified by 2 -(N,N-dimethylamino)-6-4-frans-cyclohex-amoic (DANCA). Its emission maximum shifts from 390 nm in cyclohexane to 520 nm in water, presumably as a consequence of increased polarization of the molecule in the excited state, as indicated by the green arrows in the accompanying structural formula. DANCA can be used to obtain some idea of the polarity of sites within macromolecules to which it binds.

Cyclohexane molecule (CgHn, shown on the right) has Dsd symmetry. Consider the chloro-substituted cyclohexanes with the general formula C6H ,C1 , with n = 1, 2,... and m + n = 12. Write the structural formulas for members from the CgHmCln series that have the following symmetries (i) Ci (ii) C2 (iii) C (iv) Czh (v)... 

An instructive illustration of the effect of molecular motion in solids is the proton resonance from solid cyclohexane, studied by Andrew and Eades 101). Figure 10 illustrates their results on the variation of the second moment of the resonance with temperature. The second moment below 150°K is consistent with a Dsi molecular symmetry, tetrahedral bond angles, a C—C bond distance of 1.54 A and C—H bond distance of 1.10 A. This is ascertained by application of Van Vleck s formula, Equation (17), to calculate the inter- and intramolecular contribution to the second moment. Calculation of the intermolecular contribution was made on the basis of the x-ray determined structure of the solid. 

Two stable compounds of formula C6H8 react with bromine and with KMn04. On hydrogenation with a platinum catalyst at 25°, both absorb two moles of hydrogen and form cyclohexane. Write possible structures for these substances and explain how electronic spectra may be used to tell which compound is which. 

Even though Haworth formulas give a sound representation of the ring structures of sugars, the real structure conformation can be most accurately represented by the chair forms of cyclohexane as shown in... 

The cycloalkanes are a special class of alkanes in the form of a ring. Figure 2-30 shows the Lewis structures and line-angle formulas of cyclopentane and cyclohexane, the cycloalkanes containing five and six carbons, respectively.
