Cutting tool materials 101-5 abrasion resistance

When cutting, the edge of a cutting tool operates under intense pressure and will wear due to abrasion by the material being cut. Basically, the harder the cutting-tool material the better its resistance to abrasion. [Pg.101]

Titanium siUcides are used in the preparation of abrasion- and heat-resistant refractories. Compositions based on mixtures of Ti Si, TiC, and diamond have been claimed to make wear-resistant cutting-tool tips (157). Titanium siUcide can be used as an electric—resistant material, in electrically conducting ceramics (158), and in pressure-sensitive elastic resistors, the electric resistance of which varies with pressure (159). [Pg.132]

Composite Plating. An electroless nickel matrix can be used to securely bond diamonds to cutting tools, and electroless nickel—diamond composites are also used (see Tool materials). The NYE-CARB process gives a siUcon carbide—electroless nickel composite that has extremely high abrasion resistance (49). Electroless nickel—Teflon composites are being promoted as low friction materials. [Pg.113]

Structural Hardness (SiC, TiC, TiN, Al Oj) Cutting tools, wear-resistant materials, mechanical seals, abrasives, armor, bearings... [Pg.4]
