Cutting tool materials 101-5 abrasion resistance

When cutting, the edge of a cutting tool operates under intense pressure and will wear due to abrasion by the material being cut. Basically, the harder the cutting-tool material the better its resistance to abrasion. 

Titanium siUcides are used in the preparation of abrasion- and heat-resistant refractories. Compositions based on mixtures of Ti Si, TiC, and diamond have been claimed to make wear-resistant cutting-tool tips (157). Titanium siUcide can be used as an electric—resistant material, in electrically conducting ceramics (158), and in pressure-sensitive elastic resistors, the electric resistance of which varies with pressure (159). 

Composite Plating. An electroless nickel matrix can be used to securely bond diamonds to cutting tools, and electroless nickel—diamond composites are also used (see Tool materials). The NYE-CARB process gives a siUcon carbide—electroless nickel composite that has extremely high abrasion resistance (49). Electroless nickel—Teflon composites are being promoted as low friction materials.
