The future of the alkali and alkaline earth metals seems to lie in further investigations of currently intriguing problems rather than radically new phenomena. Those investigations involve questions of astrophysi-cal abundance, Earths dynamo, time measurement standards, medical diagnosis, and—perhaps most intriguingly—new materials. 

In recent years, another facet of the double layer potential has also become of interest. This aspect deals with the interfacial surface charge between living tissue and the bodily fluid in which it is bathed. Movement of the fluid relative to the tissue or vice versa sets up electrokinetic potentials and currents that play a significant role in the compatibility of biomaterials, medical diagnosis, and overall homeostasis. 

This problem is further complicated by the fact that attempts to eliminate risk result instead in the often unfortunate displacement of risk (Malasky 1982). For example, some approved (by the US Food and Drug Administration) preservatives currently utilized in the food processing industry to prevent bacteria growth and spoilage are, themselves, a suspected cause of cancer (e.g., sodium nitrates). Likewise, there is a risk trade-off between the known benefits of improved medical diagnosis and treatment which result from the use of radiation (e.g.. X-rays, radiation therapy), against the known risks of human exposure to radiation. Hence, safety is really more of a relative issue in that nothing is completely safe under all circumstances or all conditions. There is always some example in which a relatively safe material or... 

In as much as products for the diagnosis and treatment of ocular disease cover the spectrum of practically all dosage forms and, thus, require the same pharmaceutical sciences for their development, in this chapter we discuss the entire scope of considerations involved in the development of ophthalmic products, ranging from regulatory and compendial requirements, through physicochemical, safety, and efficacy considerations, to a discussion of types of dosage forms currently used by the medical practitioner.
