Culvert

Shipments of concrete pipe in 1990 had a value of > 1.6 billion dollars. Much of this piping was for storm and sanitary sewers, culverts, and irrigation piping. Pressure piping sales were close to 300 million. There are a large number of manufacturers of concrete pipe since much of the pipe is produced reasonably close to the point of use. 

For low pressure pipelines that have ports open to the atmosphere, eg, sewers or closed effluent culverts, samplers are designed to sample through manholes. In a typical system, the Hquid is lifted through a suction line into the sampling chamber under vacuum. When filled, the vacuum shuts off, and the sample drains into a sample jar. A secondary float prevents any Hquid from reaching the vacuum pump. The suction line then drains by gravity back to the source.

Bathymetry shows that the shape of Pit Lake resembles of a funnel with the an upper surface diameter of 110 m and the diameter of the neck of 50 m. The depth from the surface of the lake to the funnel neck is approximately 20 m (the approximate position of the former crown pillar) and the total depth of the lake is 130 m. Lake outflow is controlled by a culvert at elevation 236.4 m above sea level. Field investigation indicates that the lake is fed by surface runoff and seepage of groundwater through the overburden and fractured walls of the pit (Fig. 1). 

HN-1 is approximately six times heavier than air. As a result, it can concentrate in ground depressions or in the basements of buildings, sewer lines, culverts, and other underground spaces.1 As a form of calibration, a downwind evacuation from a 55-gallon spill should be a minimum of 2.1 miles.2 See Table 3.3 for a summary of the symptoms of exposure and potential medical treatment options.

Culvert mines can be extremely useful because they can be installed in much less time than a conventional road mine. Culverts vary in size from about 12 inches in diameter to 4 feet or more. The charge is centered between the mouth of the culvert and the center of the intended lane. If the exact lane is unknown, then placement is determined by measuring from the mouth of the culvert to the line between the lanes.

If culverts arc used instead of tunnels, make sure explosive placement is done in dry weather or, barring this, in an area where drainage of the ditch water will not be immediately noticed. 

Proper tamping will reduce the amount of necessary explosive by a significant amount. The reason the IRA uses such large charges (average weight of 200 pounds) in their culvert bombs is that most of the explosive force blows out the open ends of the culvert.
